A note for the long weekend.

From Saturday 24th October until midnight on Labour Day, everything at Design Alchemy Collective is 30% off. Quilts, cushions, the Painterly range, the velvet quilts, silk cushions and kaftans - all of it.

If you've followed along, you'll know where these pieces come from. The underprint cloth sits beneath the fabric being block printed in Sanganer, Jaipur, and catches the dye that falls through. Weeks of printing build a surface nobody designed. We choose it at the right moment, and Mohini, Meena and the women in the stitching village outside Jaipur turn it into quilts and cushions.

No two are alike, so if there's a piece you've had your eye on, Saturday is first pick.

Heads up..... From Saturday 24th, until Labour Day night 26th October, everything in the collection is 30% off.

Every underprint quilt and cushion. The Painterly range. The velvet quilts in Moss, Iris Blue and Damson. Silk cushions and kaftans.

Each underprint piece exists once. It began as cloth beneath the block printing tables in Sanganer, catching colour nobody planned. When it goes, there isn't another one.

The sale opens Sat 24th October.

How to Style a Bold Cushion Without It Looking Like Too Much - Interior Designer Tips NZ

Interior designer Amanda Neill's three rules for styling a statement cushion in any room - when to use plain companions, how to pull from the room without matching it, and why you should always go bigger. Using DAC Painterly and underprint cushion covers as examples. Full guide on the blog.

The printers wiped their hands on this cloth.

Between colour runs in the Jaipur print studio, the block printers wipe their hands on whatever cloth is nearby. Over a session, a day, a week - that cloth builds up something nobody designed. Layers of colour in patterns that cannot be planned and cannot be recreated.

We found it. We had it stitched into cushion covers. It became one of the most distinctive things in the entire DAC range.

Every piece is different. Every piece exists once.

Here is something most people do not know about how our pieces are made.

In Jaipur, before the block printing begins, a length of cloth is laid beneath the printing table. Its job is to catch every drop of excess dye that falls through from the fabric above. Layer upon layer builds up across weeks of printing - colours overlapping in ways nobody planned, nobody designed, nobody could repeat if they tried.

At exactly the right moment, before the cloth turns black from too much dye, it gets pulled. And then Mohini and the stitching village women begin: layering, quilting, hand-stitching it into something finished.

That is the fabric in every DAC quilt and cushion you see on our website. The full story is on the blog - link below.

Different rooms. Different moods. Same story behind every single one.

Every cushion in this video was made from underprint fabric — cloth that sat beneath the block printing in Jaipur, catching layers of dye it was never meant to hold. No two pieces came out the same. No two ever will.

Someone asked us recently how they can tell if "one of a kind" is real or just a marketing phrase. It is a fair question.

The honest answer: check the edition number on the product page. If it says one-of-a-kind, that is exactly how many exist. 1. Full stop.

A handful of this month's pieces are one-of-a-kind, or one pair only. No discount, no countdown timer - just an honest note that once they are gone, they are gone.

When an artisan presses a hand-carved block onto cotton, two things happen at once.

The dye lands on the top fabric - crisp, deliberate, repeated across the length of the cloth. That becomes the kaftan.

But excess dye falls through to the fabric beneath. Layer upon layer, session after session, pattern on top of pattern. That becomes the underprint cushion cover.

One block. One moment of printing. Two completely different pieces.

This is why we don't waste anything.

We get asked this a lot, so here is the honest answer.

A DAC kaftan starts with hand block-printing - an artisan pressing a hand-carved wood block onto pure cotton, lining it up by eye, lifting it, moving along, pressing again. Across an entire length of cloth, in the Indian heat, with azo-free dyes that have to land right first time. The fabric dries outdoors - a step that cannot be rushed , then goes to our stitching artisans who stitch each piece to a finish built to last.

Two separate trades, both paid fairly, working across several days for one piece. Compare that to a printed roller running in seconds, which is how most "block print style" pieces on the market are actually made.

The price reflects the process, not a markup. We would rather tell you that plainly than let you assume.

Most people layer texture wrong. Here is the fix — and it takes about 60 seconds to learn.

Rule 1: Don't match. Contrast.
Rule 2: Pair smooth against rough — velvet next to linen or a woven weave.
Rule 3: Add the printed piece last. Always last.

That's it. That contrast is what makes a room feel designed rather than just decorated. We've been doing this for clients for 30 years and it still works every time.

Swipe through to see it in action — using one of our own cushions as the example, not the pitch.
