When you're having interior painting done, our team may be working through your bedrooms, living areas and other personal spaces, sometimes while you're not even home.
We understand that takes trust.

Our painters are part of our team, receive ongoing in-house training and undergo background checks. We expect them to be professional and respectful of both you and your property while they're there.

Before the job starts, we'll also talk you through what we're doing, how we're doing it and why, so you can make an informed decision about the work being carried out.

And once we're inside, protecting the house is taken seriously. Floors, kitchen benches, furniture and surrounding surfaces are covered and protected before the painting begins.

You’re trusting us with your home while we’re there. We take that responsibility seriously.

Having your house painted shouldn’t mean wondering when the painters are turning up, how many people are coming, whether the colours have been confirmed, or how long the job is actually going to take.

We put a lot of work into the process behind the painting. From a clear, detailed quote at the beginning, through to scheduling, colour confirmation and keeping you updated while we’re on site.

You should know what’s happening with your house and what happens next.

That’s a big part of the experience we’re trying to create at HPS. Great painting matters, obviously. But so does everything that happens around it.

Six projects. Six Gold Awards. 🏅

We’re very proud to share the results of the 2026 Master Painters New Zealand Awards of Excellence, with Hauraki Property Services receiving six Gold Awards across a range of residential and commercial projects.

What makes these awards particularly meaningful to us is the judging process. Earlier in the year, we submitted the projects for consideration, and during judging, the Master Painters judges travelled to each property in person to inspect the workmanship and finished surfaces.

That also meant returning to projects we had completed months earlier and seeing how the finishes were performing in real life.

A big thank you to our clients who welcomed us and the judges back into their homes and properties. We really appreciate you helping us organise access and, most importantly, trusting HPS with your projects in the first place.

And of course, a huge thank you to our team. These six Gold Awards represent a lot of preparation, attention to detail and care behind the scenes.

Once the kitchen is installed, you may never see these walls again, especially when cabinetry runs right up to the bulkhead. So, is it worth finishing them properly?

At the very minimum, we recommend plastering the GIB before the cabinetry goes in. This helps seal gaps and reduce potential draughts.

We would also recommend applying a coat of sealer. Fresh plaster can leave a dusty, porous surface, and sealing it creates a more stable finish while adding another level of protection from moisture, particularly important in a kitchen where food is prepared.

Our preference is to take it one step further and fully paint behind the cabinetry before installation. It leaves the entire room properly finished and avoids inaccessible, unfinished areas being hidden behind a brand-new kitchen.

We covered that final step in our previous video. This time, Morgan explains why even the parts you'll never see are worth preparing properly.

Do you need to paint a wall if the kitchen cabinets are going to cover it anyway?

Before a new kitchen is installed, the plasterboard still needs to be properly plastered and, at the very minimum, sealed.

Where possible, though, we recommend completing the full paint system before the cabinetry goes in.

It means the entire wall is properly finished, including areas that will become difficult or impossible to access once the kitchen is installed. It also reduces the chance of small sections being missed around cabinetry, panels and appliances, and leaves everything neat and finished behind the kitchen.

It’s a relatively small amount of additional work at this stage of the project and makes for a much cleaner installation overall.

Times are tough, so we’re always looking for ways to keep costs under control. 😂

Fortunately, when you have a painter tall enough to reach the ceiling from the floor, apparently step ladders become an unnecessary expense.

As Morgan says, “Saves me money on the step ladder.”

Sometimes having the right person for the job has unexpected benefits. 😄

Another round of cyclical maintenance completed at Mt Carmel School during the recent school holidays.

This time, our team worked through several classrooms, repainting areas around doors and window liners, along with sections of ceilings and beams.

None of these areas required a major refurbishment. Regular maintenance allows smaller areas to be addressed as they need attention, helping keep the property looking cared for and avoiding a much larger list of work building up over time.

For schools and other commercial properties, quieter periods such as school holidays are also a great opportunity to plan this work with minimal disruption.

We enjoy working with clients on an ongoing basis and getting to know their buildings over time. It makes it much easier to identify what needs attention now, what can wait, and plan future maintenance accordingly.

Not every problem is visible when we first quote a painting project.

While preparing this ceiling at Mt Carmel School, our painters started working on some cracks that initially appeared to need standard preparation and filling. Once they opened them up, however, they noticed considerable movement in the plasterboard.

Further investigation showed there wasn't adequate support behind the plasterboard. Simply filling the cracks and painting over them may have looked good when we finished, but there was a good chance the cracks would return.

We stopped, explained what we'd found to the client, and a builder was brought in to carry out the necessary remedial work. Once the underlying problem was resolved, we could continue with the painting.

These are the decisions that happen during a project that clients don't always see. If we uncover something that could affect the finished result, we'd rather address it properly than cover it up and leave a problem for later.

Can you spot Ben? 👀

A little behind-the-scenes moment from one of our current projects in Parnell.

We’re helping modernise an architecturally designed 1970s home, where much of the original ginger-toned varnished timber is being transformed with a crisp white painted finish.

Stripping or extensively sanding all of this timber would have made the project prohibitively expensive, so choosing the right paint system was particularly important. For this project, we used two coats of Dulux PRECISION® High Opacity Stain Blocker before moving on to the finishing coats.

And here’s Ben spraying it all white, while dressed almost entirely in white himself.

We’re back at Mt Carmel School, one of our regular clients, carrying out another part of their ongoing painting maintenance.

This particular job is relatively small — repainting window liners, frames and sills across several classrooms — but these smaller maintenance jobs make a difference.

Keeping on top of worn and damaged areas helps prevent them from becoming bigger jobs later and keeps the school looking cared for. We also believe that when an environment is kept tidy and well maintained, people are more likely to treat it that way too.

That’s why we’re big believers in cyclical maintenance: regularly checking what needs attention and dealing with it as it comes up, rather than waiting until everything needs repainting at once.
