𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘄𝗮𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗳𝗶𝗻𝗱! 😂

A round, extendable dining table for $100.

It's good quality, has a lovely timeless shape, and — importantly — isn't too orange!

I've been thinking about what I want my home to feel like, and I'm finding myself drawn to pieces that feel a little lighter, more relaxed and less formal.

This table ticks a lot of boxes. It's round for everyday use, but extends when I need more space around the table.

And I think it's going to work well with my "new" floral dining chairs!

More soon!

𝗣𝗹𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗻'𝘁 𝗷𝘂𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗺𝗲. 😂

Remember those dining chairs I just got rid of?

Meet their replacements.

They're floral.

They're beige.

And they're definitely NOT my dream fabric.

But they're COMFORTABLE!

And I love their shape.

They're well made, good quality, unique and they don't have that mass-produced feel that gives me the ick.

So when I spotted six of them at the op shop, I decided they were worth bringing home.

I'm not trying to make every decision all at once.

I know I want dining chairs that are comfortable.

I want something with character.

I want something that feels like it has a bit of a story.

And I want to be able to live with them while I figure out the rest.

So for now, these slightly ugly-but-very-comfortable chairs are staying. 😂

And when I find the right fabric, I think they could be fabulous.

Watch this space!

I've been thinking a lot about what I want my home to feel like — what's working, what's not, and what I keep looking at thinking, I really should do something about that.

There are things I've been contemplating getting rid of for a while. Those can go.

There are other things I haven't decided about. I'll store them in the garage for now as they may be used elsewhere.

Not every change needs to be a big decision.

Sometimes it's simply about creating a little more space and seeing what's left.

The more I make space, the easier it becomes to notice what I actually want to bring in.

𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁'𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝗮𝘂𝘁𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗳𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗮𝗽𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 — you don't have to know exactly where you're heading in order to make changes - you can have an overall plan and let it evolve.

I've had these simple little dining chairs for a LONG time. They've done me well but on the weekend they went to their new home - because now that I'm designing for comfort - I've found some much more suitable ones to take their place!

𝗚𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆𝘀.

One of the things I’m doing as I work on my own home is a proper edit.

Not a declutter.

Not a “throw everything out and start again”.

𝗔𝗻 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁.

Because before I make a whole lot of changes, I need to get really clear on what I actually love, what I don’t, what’s working, what isn’t — and what feels like me now.

And this pile of stuff tells me quite a lot.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?

Not me. They can go.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗹 𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?

I still like them, but they feel more traditional than where I’m heading now. My Mum has already put dibs on them!

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗸-𝗲𝗴𝗴 𝙗𝙡𝙪𝙚 𝗳𝗮𝗯𝗿𝗶𝗰?

Potentially. It’s fresh and could work with the new direction, so I’m keeping it in the mix.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝗴𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗻?

Probably too dark and muted for the space I’m creating.

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗳𝗮𝘂𝘅 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗿𝘀?

I’m undecided. They feel a little like the old me, but paired with some brighter stems they could still work so I’m letting them go just yet.

𝗔𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴?

The colour isn't me - never has been. I do love the style and flowers are my thing. My middle name is Fleur, after all. 😂

I could experiment with painting the background in a different way (previous life as an artist) - but not sure it's worth it.

And that's the whole point of this stage in the process.

I’m not trying to make all the decisions yet. I'm trying to get clear. Clarity first!

I'm getting clear about:

What feels heavy or like the old me

What colours make me feel happy and uplifted (and which don't)

What am I holding onto that can now get moved on to make way for something else.

𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝘆 𝗯𝗶𝗴 𝗰𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲𝘀.

I think that's true whether you're redesigning your whole home or just trying to work out why a room doesn't feel quite right anymore.

A quick Sunday update on my home transformation. I sold my old dining chairs today, and yesterday I bought a new dining table (net difference was $0!) I've also found some really comfortable (ok and pretty dated) dining chairs....but once recovered they're going to be great! Stay tuned...

I could replace it. But does it actually NEED replacing?

Maybe it just needs a little love.

A different position.
A repaint in a colour that feels more like me.

I think we can be very quick to assume that if we don't love something, we need to get rid of it.

But there's a big difference between 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 and 𝐬𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐛𝐞𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐟𝐚𝐯𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐲𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞.

And that distinction can save you money, prevent unnecessary waste, and sometimes lead to a home that feels 𝑚𝑜𝑟𝑒 personal.

I've written more about this in my latest Journal:

𝗠𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝘀 𝗮 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗹𝗶𝗸𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗼𝗹𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗹𝗸𝘀' 𝗵𝗼𝗺𝗲. 😂

This is what happens when you're in the middle of a furniture edit and you've brought the new things home before you've quite managed to part with the old ones.

But actually, having all these chairs together has been really useful. It's made me think about what I want my home to feel like now — and which pieces are helping me get there.

I'm looking for comfortable, uplifting and current, but still eclectic and full of personality.

I don't want everything to match or feel overly polished. I want colour, texture, pattern and pieces with a bit of history.

Most importantly, I want to feel good when I walk through the door. I want cosy. I want somewhere to curl up with a book. I want my home to feel nourishing and inviting.

I have a couple of parlour chairs that I still love, but they're starting to feel a little too old-school for the direction I'm heading.

Then there's the Don chair I recovered myself at a night class. I still love the fabric, so that one may find a new home in my office.

But the ones I'm most excited about are the loud stripy armchairs that I recently found for $50 each.

𝗕𝗲𝗰𝗮𝘂𝘀𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲𝘆'𝗿𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗳𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲!

And that's becoming a much bigger part of my decision-making.

I'll eventually recover them, bringing in more of the colour and pattern I'm after.

This is what I'm finding interesting about a soft edit.

It's not about whether something is good or bad.

It's about asking - Does this belong in the home I'm creating now?

More comfortable. More uplifting. More current. Still eclectic. Still me.

And apparently, for now, that means living with an old folks' home vibe while I work it all out. 😂

𝗔 𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘁𝗹𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗼𝗼𝗻 𝗴𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗺𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗮𝗺𝗽𝘀. 😂

I bought a new lamp because I loved the base, but once I got it home I wasn't convinced the linen shade was right.

So I tried the black shade from another lamp.

Much better.

But then I had a spare linen shade… and remembered another lamp base I already owned that had a couple of very naff shades on it.

I tried the linen shade on that one.

And suddenly that lamp looked completely different too.

One new lamp.
Two existing lamp bases.
A couple of shade swaps.

And no new purchases apart from the original lamp.

This is one of my favourite ways to work on a home.

Before you decide something has to go, try changing the combination.

You might not have the wrong thing.
You might just have the wrong shade. 😉

When I work with a client, I don't start with a shopping list. So where DO I start?

By understanding the home they already have.

This is 𝗦𝘁𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝟭 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗦𝗼𝘂𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗼𝗱 — 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬.

That means getting clear about where we're starting before making decisions about where we're going.

Because I've just moved back into my own home, I've got the perfect opportunity to put this into practice.

What's working?
What's not?
What do I love?
What feels wrong?
What needs to change — and what doesn't?

I've been seeing things differently — and feeling excited about making changes.

Over the next few months, I'll take you behind the scenes as I work through the Homes with Soul Method in my own home — sharing some of the decisions I'm making and why.

Because sometimes the hardest part isn't knowing what you like.

It's knowing what to keep, what to get rid of, and where to start.

Beautiful homes begin with 𝗖𝗟𝗔𝗥𝗜𝗧𝗬.

One thing I often notice is that people already own many of the pieces that could help create a really beautiful, cohesive home.

The problem is usually not the individual pieces themselves.

It’s not knowing how to combine them in a way that elevates them and allows them to work together properly.

Sometimes people assume they need to replace everything and start again.

But often, the bigger shift comes from identifying the pieces that genuinely clash with the overall feeling of the space — and building more intentionally around everything else.

Because interestingly, even fairly ordinary pieces can start looking incredibly good when they’re layered with:

— similar textures

— repeated colours

— connected materials

— balanced shapes

— and a consistent overall feeling

That’s usually when the home starts feeling more personal, cohesive, and resolved.

Not because every piece is expensive or “designer.”

But because the space finally feels connected as a whole.

And often, once people understand that underlying connection, it becomes much easier to evolve the home without constantly replacing everything they already own.
