A photograph can introduce a rug. Seeing it laid out tells you much more.

The proportions of the medallion, the way the border frames the field, the relationship between the colours, these are the details that matter when you are choosing a piece for your home.

This 268 × 186 cm Jaldar is hand-knotted in pure wool, pairing a soft beige ground with distinctive geometric patterning in orange, green and grey.

Choosing gets more interesting when opposites are allowed to sit side by side.

Rich traditional pattern beside pale restraint. Bold geometry beside quieter contemporary design. Each changes the character of a space in a completely different way.

That is the advantage of seeing a real collection together: you do not simply confirm what you already like. You may discover the rug you had not imagined at all.

A Mahi Tabriz does something more interesting: it unfolds.

The central medallion does not stand alone. Around it, the Mahi lattice repeats with remarkable discipline, carrying the eye across a deep brown-black field before the warm beige, ivory and muted rust borders bring everything quietly back into order.

Hand-knotted in pure wool and measuring 295 x 196 cm, this is a rug built as much on rhythm and proportion as on ornament.

For the first few seconds, the colour is held back.

Then this Super Kazak is allowed to reveal itself fully, a rich red field, geometric medallions, ivory framing and carefully placed blue and soft-green accents, all brought together through hand-knotted wool.

Now joining the Hand-Knotted Rugs collection at Silk Road Rugs.

Some designs are understood immediately. This one rewards another look.
