The secret to high performance homes isn’t technology, it’s timing.
Energy modelling is a design tool when introduced early, not a compliance exercise at the end.

One of the secrets I have discovered to creating beautiful, high performance homes for people is using energy modelling deliberately at the concept stage, not treating it as a compliance exercise at the end.

Energy modelling can be a powerful design tool when it is introduced early. It can shape decisions from the beginning, meaning design choices are made from an informed place, not just from an aesthetic point of view but also from a performance point of view. This creates smoother alignment with frameworks like Homestar and Passive House.

Helping clients understand how and when to introduce tools like energy modelling is part of guiding them through the full journey from concept to completion.

An architectural designer who treats energy modelling as a design input rather than a compliance step changes what is possible across architecture and new homes performance. The result is a home that performs the way it was designed to, not the way the workarounds allowed.

What the supermarket b**r fridge can teach you about staying cool.

On a hot day, standing in the supermarket's b**r chiller feels amazing — but your home obviously can't be turned into one. Blasting the air conditioning isn't really solving the overheating problem, it's just band-aiding it.

In the next reel I touch on power bills, and what electric cars can teach us about designing a home.

The bigger picture of a project includes things designers don’t usually mention.

Insurance sits outside the strict definition of architecture, but it sits squarely inside the responsibility of a designer who cares about client outcomes.

It is pretty common in the architecture industry to focus solely on designing and detailing homes or buildings. However, it is really important to step back and see the bigger picture, and to appreciate the journey clients go on from concept through to completion. One of the aspects that catches a lot of clients out is contract works insurance, particularly when they are doing a renovation.
For a new build, contract works insurance is taken out by the builder, so as a client you do not have to worry about it. There are plenty of other things occupying your headspace at that stage.

However, if you are doing a renovation, contract works insurance needs to be taken out by you. You may be living in the home while the work is happening, and there will be existing parts of the house that are not being touched. You want to ensure both the new works and the existing structure are covered, so that if there is a disaster or damage to either, you are not left out of pocket.
Insurance sits outside the strict definition of architecture, but it sits squarely inside the responsibility of any architectural designer who genuinely cares about the new homes outcomes for their clients. Flagging it early is part of the job.

How I got banned from calling noise control.

My neighbour would crank her stereo full noise, then turn it down the second she knew noise control was on the way. You can't control what your neighbours do, but there's a way to protect your own peace and quiet regardless.

In the next reel I touch on overheating, and the emergency kit my mum packed for my first car.
