Taupō’s new Starlight Cinema has hit the stars with a double showing at two national design awards.

Turning a vet clinic into a labour of love, owners Tammy and Charlie Prince commissioned interior designer Holly Houndstooth to imagine the visual transformation – inside and out.

Earlier this year the project was a finalist in two categories at the New Zealand Interior Awards – Civic and Colour...

A lovely write up this morning in the local paper about our recent awards achievements. A full page even?! How awesome! Thanks

We’re still absolutely fizzing after picking up SILVER and BRONZE at the prestigious Best Design Awards in Auckland last Friday! 🥈🥉

To be recognised on a national stage alongside some of New Zealand’s most incredible creative talent is a pretty surreal feeling. Especially for our little Taupō design studio!

Feeling incredibly proud, grateful and just a little bit blown away! What a moment!

It’s Best Design Awards week! An absolute privilege to be a finalist in three categories this year for our project at Starlight Cinema Centre

Excited to share that Houndstooth Interiors is a finalist in the 2026 Stella Awards!

This year, part of the judging is decided by public vote, so I’d absolutely love your support. If you’ve enjoyed following my work or have supported Houndstooth along the way, please take a moment to vote for us in the Solo Entrepreneur category.

Running a business on your own is no small feat. Every role, from designer and project manager to bookkeeper, marketer and cleaner, is done by the same person. I take my hat off to everyone in this category because I know just how hard we all work.

Being recognised alongside such inspiring businesses is an honour, and I’m incredibly grateful that the projects, creativity and hard work over the past year have led to this opportunity.

What an awesome night in Auckland at the Interior of the Year Awards!

We were finalists in not one, but two categories, something that still completely blows my mind.

We didn’t bring home a trophy this time, but we did walk away with an incredible feature in HOME Magazine, and honestly, seeing our work in print never gets old. It’s such a special feeling to have your work shared in the pages of a magazine you’ve admired for years.

So grateful to be recognised alongside so many talented designers, and excited for what’s next

One week on and we’re still thinking about it. Here’s a snippet of some of the beautiful tactile mood boards we put together for the event Marchand luxury oak Residium Design + Building Centre

Who doesn’t love a little ✨ .taupo

This combo of colour, texture, and practicality is easily one of my favourite spots in the whole space. Huge shoutout to for building such an epic joinery base, and to our Mr Brett for pulling some very late nights bringing my vision to life 🙌

A waiting area that feels like it could belong in a Wes Anderson film. I’ve always loved the way he plays with colour, symmetry, and those quiet, thoughtful moments within a space.

That feeling became a big inspiration for the perching areas and flow through Starlight Cinema, creating little spots where people can pause, take it in, and feel part of the experience. 📸

One of the moments I held closest in the design of Starlight Cinema was the feeling of the goodbye.

Not just the welcome, but the sendoff, that quiet transition from story back to reality.

After being wrapped in a film for a few hours, I wanted that final walk to feel soft, considered, and just a little bit transportive. A space where lighting, wallpaper, acoustic paneling, shadow and texture come together to create something immersive, almost like a final scene you move through.

This hallway is that moment. A capsule of time. You could be anywhere in the world.

Moody, layered, and quietly luxurious, it’s designed to hold you just a little longer before you step back out into the crisp Taupō night and into the wild world beyond.

A gentle exhale at the end of the story. 📸 .taupo .electrical
