First Light Studio Ltd

First Light Studio Ltd First Light Studio are architects who believe in the power of design to create a better living future for more people. We believe in great living.

We believe in its enduring power to enhance our wellbeing, and its ability to work with nature, not against it. But for too long great living has been defined by the wrong thinking, resulting in buildings that are unhealthy, expensive and unsustainable. We are speaking up for a fresh direction. Our purpose is to redesign our living future. To create living environments that flex with the rhythms of life and grow beautifully together with their natural surroundings. Brilliantly designed spaces that enhance life and our connection to our land and each other, for generations to come. At First Light we combine internationally award-winning design with leading-edge eco technology and a love of working closely with people passionate about truly sustainable living. Based in Wellington, but serving commercial and residential clients throughout New Zealand, we are architects who believe in the power of design to create a better living future for more people. Tamahere Arts and Crafts Centre

The centre replaced a small, poorly ventilated art space tucked inside the original Tamahere village clubhouse. In its place is a generous, light-filled studio built specifically for creative work and community life, with room to host workshops for up to twenty people.

The space doubles as a small gallery and social hub, used for exhibitions, opening nights, and informal gatherings as much as for day-to-day classes.

Jacks Point Rise

The built form draws its inspiration from the natural landforms and the historical process of shifting rock forms that created the Remarkable Mountain range that provides the backdrop to Jacks Point. A simple gable form is shifted along its ridge line to create a bold, sharp, form reminiscent of the jagged mountains beyond. This tectonic shift of the form, similar to that of a broken rock, provides rich sheltered outdoor living spaces in the voids created by the form.

As Luwte is reaching the final stages of construction, we're reflecting on progress to date.

This photo series illustrates how each corner of the home is oriented to a direction and a temperament, creating a compact plan with a big story.

We are watching with eager anticipation as continue to bring Luwte to life.

Te Horo Beach House

Silvery cladding references the driftwood piled upon the weathered coast, its orientation changing with the different activities within the home. The beach house is a luxurious retreat from city and corporate life, designed to become a full-time home in the near future. Muted tones and natural materials foster calm introspection, and double glazing mutes the wild performance of the elements playing out on the exterior.

Two Gables

Photographed by

A simple and elegant farmhouse designed for suburban living. It has been carefully crafted to strike a balance between public and private spaces, featuring a central courtyard/deck that serves as a seamless transition between the indoors and outdoors.

The property offers a protected view of the river lands and the 'Garden of Eden' native planting project, enhancing its serene ambiance and further integrating it with the natural landscape. The use of locally sourced timber, with Japanese Cedar for the exterior and Poplar for the interior, underscores the commitment to sustainability and a sense of place.

Custom-built joinery elements, including bookshelves, a study desk, built-in seats, and storage, have been tailored to the clients' needs, ensuring a personalized and functional living space.

First Light, 15 Years On

Fifteen years ago, a little New Zealand house travelled to the other side of the world. In September 2011, the First Light House stood in Washington D.C., surrounded by homes designed by some of the world’s leading universities. It had crossed the Pacific in pieces, packed into shipping containers and put back together by a young team of New Zealanders who had never done anything quite like it before.

The house we took with us told a distinctly New Zealand story. It was inspired by the bach, not so much as an architectural style but as a way of living: simple, efficient and deeply connected to the landscape, with spaces that brought people together and made the most of what they had. At a competition concerned with the future of energy and housing, our response was in many ways remarkably uncomplicated. Before generating more energy, use less of it. Before building more space, make better use of the space you have.

It worked. The First Light House finished third in the world and won the engineering competition, an extraordinary result for a young team from a small country on the other side of the world. But with 15 years’ distance, the competition result feels like only one measure of its success.

What strikes us now is how much of First Light was already there.

Those ideas have been tested over 15 years of practice, but they haven’t gone away. They have taken us into prefabrication and high-performance homes, into development and construction, and into community housing where the same thinking can benefit many families at once. We still love the intimacy of designing one home for one family, but we’ve always believed architecture should reach further than the relatively few people able to commission a bespoke house. Today we’re equally comfortable asking how those skills might be applied to one house or one hundred.

To learn more about this 15 year journey, read about it on our website.

Beach Rd Community Housing

Exciting to see these townhouses are on site with Stackhouse and Firth Construction.

These homes reimagine coastal living in Paekākāriki through a distinctly Aotearoa lens. Designed by First Light Studio for Te Āhuru Mōwai, the ten-townhouse development combines contemporary coastal architecture with Māori design principles, celebrating community, connection, and the natural landscape.
