Every creature in nature has a role even the ones most people want to swat, trap or ignore.

Frogs eat insects.

Bats hunt huge numbers of night-flying insects, including many agricultural pests.

Spiders quietly capture insects that can damage plants and crops. Research has found that spiders can provide significant natural pest control in agricultural ecosystems.

When we use pesticides, we aren't always affecting only the pests we want to remove. Depending on the chemical and how it is used, pesticides can also harm non-target wildlife, including beneficial insects, amphibians and other organisms.

And when natural predators disappear, we can lose part of the ecosystem's own pest-control system.

That's why protecting frogs, bats, spiders and other predators matters.

Nature has been controlling insect populations through complex food webs for millions of years.

That doesn't mean pesticides are never necessary. They can have important roles in agriculture and public health.

But in our gardens and yards, we can often start with simpler solutions: healthy habitats, fewer unnecessary chemicals, and giving natural predators a chance to do their work.

So next time you see a frog sitting in your garden, a bat flying overhead or a spider in the corner, remember:

It may not be a pest.

It may be part of the solution.
