Can interior design make life a little easier for people living with Alzheimerโs and dementia? Research says the environment matters.
Here are 5 evidence-informed ways to design more supportive spaces:
1. Make the way forward obvious.
Simple layouts, visible destinations, landmarks and clear environmental cues can support orientation and wayfinding. Good spatial planning matters more than signage alone.
2. Use contrast with purpose.
Make important elements easier to distinguish, such as doors, furniture and bathroom fixtures. Color should help communicate the environment, not simply decorate it.
3. Design for the senses, without overwhelming them.
Lighting, sound, visual complexity and other sensory conditions matter. Research suggests balancing overstimulation with sensory deprivation rather than simply making everything stimulating.
4. Keep spaces familiar and recognizable.
Domestic, familiar environments and recognizable furnishings can help support everyday activities and make spaces easier to understand and use.
5. Support independence, not just safety.
A dementia-supportive interior should help people continue eating, dressing, moving, socializing and performing everyday activities as independently as possible.
Good design cannot cure Alzheimerโs. But it can help create environments that are easier to understand, navigate and live in.
