𝗪𝗛𝗘𝗥𝗘 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗪𝗔𝗧𝗘𝗥 𝗠𝗘𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗨𝗦

The initial design included railings around the perimeter. But as we observed how the Badjao people live, we began to reconsider how the space could better reflect their relationship with the water.

For a community whose lives are deeply connected to it, the water was never something to keep away from. It was part of their everyday lives, inseparable from the way they lived and gathered.

We imagined people sitting by the water, soaking their feet when the tide rises, and experiencing the place in a way that feels natural to the community.

This understanding informed the design in many ways. One was the decision to remove the railings and introduce decks where people could gather, connect, and spend time together. These decks eventually became the cornerstone of Museo Pantan.

𝗙𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝘀, 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗲𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗠𝗮𝗹𝗮𝘀𝗮𝗸𝗶𝘁. It begins with understanding people, recognizing what matters to them, and translating that understanding into spaces that honor their way of life.

Opening this November, 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗼 𝗣𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗮𝗻 celebrates the rich heritage and culture of Basilan.

Royal Pineda is a Filipino architect and Doctor of Humanities, founder of ROYAL PINEDA+, and a leading advocate of Modern Filipino Architecture • Design —an ethos rooted in nature, authenticity, and cultural identity with innovation and global relevance.

Educated at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines, he has developed his philosophies such as “Nature is Peace”, “Man is Nature” and “Variety of the World”, shaping works that are truthful,

Royal’s vision of “Practical Luxury” elevates design through purpose and resourcefulness, while his idea of a “Culture of Betterment” positions architecture as a catalyst for national and global progress.
His recognitions include the National Commission for Culture and the Arts’ Ani ng Dangal Award, BCI Asia’s Top 10 Architects, and World Architecture Festival shortlists.

Recently, he was appointed as Cultural Sites domain private sector representative of the Philippine Creative Industries Development Council. He serves as Chairman Emeritus of the Design Advisory
