Lapa is Lisbon at its most composed — embassy-lined streets, quiet slopes and views towards the Tagus.
Inside one of its historic houses in Lisbon, Portugal, Aurora Arquitectos introduced a deep burgundy staircase that runs through the full height of the 390 m² residence, transforming four floors into one continuous vertical space.
The classical street façade remains untouched. Behind it, the staircase stands clear of the walls, allowing air, light and sound to travel through the house. A skylight at the top draws natural light all the way down to the ground floor.
At the centre of it all, oak stair treads bring warmth and natural texture to the deep burgundy lacquer, creating a refined contrast with the pale interiors. The use of natural oak connects the staircase with the warmth of the wooden elements throughout the residence.
A beautiful example of contemporary Lisbon architecture and interior design, where material, colour and light work together to define the space.
