W**E BAR 11.29 studio
W**E BAR is the fourth building on one site in Khao Yai: a place to meet, talk and drink w**e in the forest. Our question was never how the building should look, but how it enters ground that already has trees on it while disturbing as little as possible. That sent us back to the most basic instrument we have: the wall.
In 1851 Gottfried Semper argued that architecture is assembled from four elements: hearth, mound, roof, and enclosing membrane. The wall has no structural origin in his account but a woven one: a screen hung up to say this ground is ours. Nothing obliges the four to be one mass. Ordinary buildings fuse them until a single wall keeps out sun and rain, carries load, marks territory and decides who may enter. We pulled those jobs apart: three boundaries that never have to coincide.
The first is the ground. We replaced the wall with earth mounds. A mound does not enclose; it holds territory through eye level, slope and proximity. The mounds are not landscape around a building but part of it.
The second is climate. Banham described two ways of making shelter: build a structure and get inside it, or light a fire and stay within its radius. Our roof follows the second: thin steel plates at different heights and angles, scattered among the trees on a few slim columns. Broken into pieces it loses its mass, leaving shadows floating in the canopy. Below, no single condition but a gradient, from open ground to deep shade.
After dark the black steel merges with the tree shadows and the roof all but disappears, replaced by the warm light at the counter, people talking, a glass in someone's hand. The boundary is now the radius of that light: Semper's hearth with the heat taken out, left with its original function, a reason to sit together.
We are not erasing boundaries; an absence of boundaries produces no place at all. We are making them thinner, more elastic, different at different hours. A site is never a blank sheet, so we do not begin by choosing a form. We begin by reading what the site already does, then decide what to add.
One question for anyone who sits there: while you drink w**e under those steel plates, are you inside a building, or in the forest?
