Ovacık Evi
Birlikte olma, barınma, çalışma, aylaklık etme, üretme… Evin farklı halleri. Bu eylemleri barındıran iç mekânlar yapının kütlelerini oluştururken, kütlelerin şekillenişi ve aralarında kurduğu ilişki, evin coğrafyayla buluştuğu yarı açık alanları ortak bir yaşam zeminine dönüştürüyor.

Ovacık House
Gathering, dwelling, working, idleness… Different states of the home. The interior spaces that accommodate these states form the building’s volumes, while the shaping of these volumes and the relationships between them transform the semi-open spaces into a shared ground for living.

Located on a hillside, Ovacık House is nearing completion. The semi-open spaces defined by its prismatic volumes will soon be filled with shade, breeze, and traces of life.

“Crafts & Grafts”: Atlas of an Architecture of Additions

Our proposal, shortlisted for the Türkiye Pavilion open call for the 20th International Architecture Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia, approaches Türkiye’s built environment not as a collection of finished objects, but through the layers that are added, removed, transformed and reused over time. These interventions are more than everyday modifications: they are traces of an ongoing squabble between buildings and life. While they sometimes respond to necessities such as climate, maintenance, privacy, storage and accessibility, they may also generate new problems concerning structural safety, property, regulation and collective life.

The project examines architectural additions along the axes of necessities and potentialities, bringing together the different responses of users, craftspeople and architects to similar conditions in the form of an atlas. Necessities reveal the frictions between existing buildings and changing social, economic and climatic conditions; potentialities explore alternative forms of addition that can be developed by learning from local knowledge and practices of making. Craft refers to situated knowledge of making, adapting and repairing, while graft describes architectural additions that learn from this knowledge and aim to make buildings more resilient to future crises.

Although our proposal was not selected, we believe that mapping the logics and practices of informal production can make an important contribution to contemporary architectural debate, and we will continue the research in different forms.
We congratulate the team behind “Spolia Futures”, which will be exhibited at the Biennale, and look forward to the discussions they will open up around an architecture of addition.

150 m³

150 m³
Four friends, a similar volume, two different commons.

The student housing scenario we are currently developing for the METU Ankara Campus offers a different interpretation of the spatial configuration we implemented within a similar volume at the Cyprus Campus (Image 5), the first phase of which is now in use. Rather than organizing the private areas vertically, as in the Cyprus model, each user is provided with an individual, functional living space arranged around a shared communal area. In both proposals, furniture design is used as one of the fundamental elements that defines the space.

5 Buildings for METU

Two campuses, two contexts, five distinct buildings.
A body of work spanning twenty years.

Different forms of dwelling, learning, research, and production… Each project finds its place by developing a language of its own, rooted in its particular time and context.
At a moment when the METU Ankara Campus has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage Tentative List, we see a new threshold from which to read together the buildings we designed for the Ankara and Northern Cyprus campuses.

// Working within memory-laden contexts such as the METU campus has always led us to reflect on the "genius loci" of the site. In the EBI New Dormitory Project, which marks our fifth design for the METU campuses, we reinterpreted this relationship through spatial layout, structure and materiality //
