The Witches’ Tree is one of Louisville's most mysterious landmarks, famous for its twisted trunk, enormous knots, and a legend dating back to 1889.
Location: Park Avenue and South 6th Street, across from Central Park in Old Louisville, KY 40208.
The legend
According to local folklore:
1889: A group of witches supposedly gathered beneath a large maple tree to perform rituals.
The curse: City officials cut down the tree for a May Day celebration. The witches allegedly cursed Louisville.
March 27, 1890: A devastating tornado struck Louisville, killing more than 100 people.
The rebirth: Legend says lightning struck the original stump and a strange, twisted tree grew in its place.
The tornado was real, but the witches' curse remains folklore.
What makes it unusual?
The tree standing there today is generally identified as an Osage orange (Maclura pomifera), rather than a maple. Its massive burls and contorted wood give it an almost supernatural appearance.
