❄️🔥 HVAC 101: Why Is My Outdoor Unit Running When the Heat Is On?
If you have a heat pump, seeing the outdoor unit running in cooler weather can be completely normal.

Unlike a traditional furnace, a heat pump works by moving heat from one place to another, so the outdoor unit is still part of the process even when your home is heating.

You may also notice your system occasionally going into a defrost cycle on colder mornings. That can look a little strange if you’re not expecting it, but it’s a normal part of how many heat pumps operate.

What’s not normal? Constant trouble keeping up, unusual noises, ice that never seems to clear, or a system that just doesn’t seem to be heating properly.

🔥 Turned the heat on for the first time and wondered, “What IS that smell?”
You’re definitely not the only one.

After sitting unused for months, a little dust can collect on parts of your heating system. The first time the heat kicks on, that dust may burn off and cause a temporary dusty or slightly burnt smell. Usually, it fades pretty quickly.

What we wouldn’t ignore is a strong electrical or plastic smell, visible smoke, or an odor that just keeps hanging around.

Basically, a little “first heat of the season” smell can be normal. Something that makes you stop and think that really doesn’t smell right deserves a closer look.

🔥 HVAC 101: What’s That Smell?

The first time you turn on the heat after summer, you may notice a temporary dusty or burning smell.
Often, that’s simply dust that has settled on components during the warmer months burning off. It should disappear fairly quickly.
If the smell continues, becomes strong, smells electrical, or you see smoke, shut the system down and have it checked.
