Tis the season for bread baking, fall cleaning and front porch sitting as the weather cools down and the leaves show off their beautiful colors. πŸ‚ (No need to show the cleaning, but I promise it is happening πŸ˜‰)

Which team are you β€” 🍞 bread baking, 🧹 fall cleaning, or πŸͺ‘ front porch sitting?

Tulip bed prep is officially underway! 🌷

These five raised beds are where our very first tulip crop will grow. This week we got the beds set in place and lined the bottoms with hardware cloth β€” tulip bulbs are basically candy to voles, and we are not running a buffet out here. πŸ˜…

Next step is a Saturday run for topsoil and compost to fill them up. Then we'll water everything in, let it settle, and once the ground cools down, in go 1,500 bulbs β€” five varieties, all tucked in before winter.

Come March, these beds should be solid color. Our first-ever tulips, and I can't wait to share them with you at the farm stand. 🌷

Peony rescue mission last night! 🌸

These peony roots were planted last fall in a spot that turned out to be too wet β€” and peonies hate wet feet. So up they came today, and just look at this close-up: every one of those plump pink points is called an "eye," and each eye is a stem (and hopefully a bloom!) waiting for next spring. Seeing them up close never gets old! 🀩

Each root got a good check-over, and now they're headed to a new spot with better drainage, where they can settle in over the winter and come up strong next year. Peonies take their time β€” they're a plant-for-the-future kind of flower β€” but they are so worth the wait.

The flower stand is where you see the pretty part. This right here is where it starts. πŸ’—

The results are in! πŸ—³
Thank you to everyone who voted in last week's ranunculus poll β€” you honestly helped me decide what to order for this fall.

Here's how it landed: Milka β€” that soft lilac-purple β€” was the clear favorite, with Pastello's rosy pink second, Clementine orange third, and Giallo yellow bringing up the rear. The favorite color combination was orange and purple.

Knowing that, the majority of our corms will be pink and purple but we're also adding a bold splash of orange as well!

These are the colors that will be blooming here March through May. I can't wait to put them in your hands at the stand next spring! πŸ’œπŸ©·πŸ§‘

Good morning, Appomattox! 🌸

Well, the dahlias have made the decision for us. They are blooming so happily out there that we don't have much choice β€” we're reopening the farm stand for a short time!

As the dahlias bloom, we'll have fresh bouquets like these at the stand for $25.

They'll come in waves as the flowers open, so there will only be a few at a time. If you'd like one, send us a message to reserve yours and we'll put your name on it for pickup at the farm stand.

We don't know how long they'll keep this up β€” the first hard frost will close the show β€” so if you've been missing fresh flowers on your table, consider this a sweet little bonus round of the season. πŸ’

It makes my heart so happy to see this view as our front yard again. The work/home life balance already feels better. You can see the hundreds of little amaranth seeds that will serve as a quiet reminder of what used to be here. 🌱

We are looking forward to planting some beautiful shade and ornamental trees out front- what favorites would you recommend? 🌳

When littles aren't feeling well, our day shifts to a slower pace. I love to work in the kitchen, so when kiddos want me inside with them instead of out in the gardens, I take the opportunity to try new recipes or make family favorites. 🍜

What did your mama make for you when you were sick as a kid? I remember Campbell's chicken soup and grilled cheese sandwiches cut up into triangles with fond memories. 🍲πŸ₯ͺ

Team work makes the dream work and I have the best crew!πŸ‘¨β€πŸ‘©β€πŸ‘§β€πŸ‘¦ Phase 2 of bed prep is complete here at Wildway! Each bed has been cleared, broadforked, given a layer of compost and then tilled. It's not exciting work but it is important. Healthy soil leads to happy, healthy plants growing beautiful flowers for you all. πŸ’

Although a few beds are still waiting for Campanula plugs and ranunculus corms to be planted, the rest are tucked in for winter. Sleep tight! 😴

I scored at Lowe's last night β€” nine Limelight hydrangeas on clearance came home with me (plus a fig tree that somehow jumped in the cart too πŸŒ³πŸ˜…).
I've got them staged around the the back deck for now. These will grow 6–8 feet tall, so placement matters! Fall is the perfect time to plant shrubs, and I can't wait for those big creamy blooms next summer.
Any other clearance-aisle hunters out there? What havr you scored so far this fall? 🌸
