Welcome to the kitchen of our Colonial Revival project! This is a 1920s Dutch Colonial home in Glen Ellyn, IL, that had great bones to work with.
The heart of this kitchen is the table — it invites you to pull up a chair and gather around. Our clients have a big family, and it was very important to them that there was space for everyone to come together.
The cabinetry was made by a local cabinet company. We selected a beautiful medium-dark stain on quarter-sawn white oak, and it turned out just beautifully. Countertops are soapstone with an ogee edge and the unlacquered brass hardware will patina over time.
One of the goals in this kitchen was to keep it feeling authentic to an earlier time. You see this in the refurbished stove and the minimal cabinetry. We went with an “unfitted” look — meaning more individual pieces, like this antique cabinet, were incorporated.
We also draped the walls and ceiling in beadboard and nickel-gap paneling instead of plain drywall, and it really added to the warm, cozy character of the space.
This kitchen turned out so charming! I’m thrilled with how it all came together for our clients.
