Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day so let’s talk about how your bathroom may be affecting your stress levels more than you think.
And no, we’re not saying a new shower will solve everything life throws at you
BUT there is actually psychology behind the way our homes affect how we feel.
Our brains are constantly taking in our surroundings.
Clutter, poor lighting, unfinished spaces and things that don’t function well can create a sense of mental “noise.”
Research has even found connections between how people perceive their homes and patterns of cortisol and mood.
So when we design a bathroom, we’re thinking about more than just making it pretty.
COLOR
Color is tied to emotional associations. Research has found that blues and greens are commonly associated with calming emotions and lighter colors tend to be associated with more positive emotions.
LIGHTING
Good lighting can completely change how a space feels. And light isn’t just visual, also it interacts with our body’s circadian rhythm, which is connected to sleep and mood.
STORAGE
When everything has a place, you’re not constantly processing what needs to be picked up, moved or dealt with. A more organized environment can feel restorative and less mentally demanding.
FUNCTION
A bathroom that really works for your family removes points of friction from your day. Enough counter space, shower that fits your routine and storage where you really need it.
FEELING
Natural materials, softer textures, lighting and a sense of openness can all contribute to how restorative a space feels.
This is why we don’t believe remodeling is just about making a room look better.
It’s about creating a home that supports the people living in it.
If your bathroom is the first room you walk into every morning and the last room you use before bed…
It should definitely make your life feel a little easier.
Happy World Mental Health Day. Take care of your mind and create spaces that help you do the same!
