We came across this quote recently: “Buying plastic bins destined for the landfill just to store clutter destined for the landfill is the peak irony of modern organization.”

It’s a clever line, but it leaves out the most important part of professional organizing – the work that happens before a bin ever enters the picture.

“Honor the space.” It’s something we often say to our clients.

Every drawer, closet, and room can only hold so much comfortably. You might be able to squeeze in one more thing, but fitting everything in doesn’t always mean the space is working for you. When we fill a space to its limits – or beyond – things become harder to find, harder to access, and harder to put away.

Without breathing room, even an organized space can feel crowded and be difficult to maintain.

Honoring the space means letting its capacity guide what you keep.

And yes, that may mean letting go of some things – even things that are still useful or that you once loved. Those choices can be difficult. But in return, you gain a home that’s easier to live in and a space that feels lighter and calmer. And you’ll find yourself enjoying the things you do keep even more.

The holidays have a way of asking more of our homes.

Guest rooms welcome visitors. Pantries and coat closets hold more than usual. And storage areas host rounds of that familiar – and nearly universal – holiday game: “I know it’s in here somewhere.”

These spaces suddenly need to work harder, and getting them organized ahead of time can mean a lot less scrambling later.

We often hear our clients refer to – or show us – their “D.O.O.M. pile.”

D.O.O.M. stands for “Didn’t Organize, Only Moved”. And in this pile are the things that get shifted, often from one surface to another, because you don’t know what to do with them – or simply haven’t had the time or energy to deal with what’s in it.

They tend to hold that familiar mix: mail, returns, receipts, gift cards, things that belong upstairs, items awaiting a decision, and, of course, a few mystery cords that might be important someday.
