🌧️ Stop Repairing the Same Driveway Washout!

When heavy rain repeatedly carries gravel away, adding more material only treats the damage—not the source of the problem.

The real solution starts with controlling the flow of water.

In this new Yard Coach video, I take you through a DIY French drain installation designed to capture runoff, redirect it, and help protect the driveway from future washouts.

Before digging, study how water moves across your property and make sure it has a safe, effective place to discharge. Fix the water’s path first—then repair the driveway.

Have you been dealing with erosion, standing water, or driveway washouts? Tell me about it in the comments!

🌿 Big Burgundy Color in a Small Shrub!

Want rich, dramatic foliage without adding an oversized shrub to your landscape? Meet Very Fine Wine® weigela!

This compact beauty grows approximately 2–2½ feet tall and wide, combining deep burgundy-purple foliage with bright pink spring flowers. It’s a great choice for foundation plantings, garden borders, smaller landscapes, and containers.

For the darkest foliage and best flowering, plant it where it will receive plenty of sunshine. If pruning is necessary, wait until immediately after it finishes flowering.

This week’s Yard Coach Plant of the Week is Pocahontas Bee Balm (Monarda didyma 'Pocahontas').
This is a bold, tough perennial that pollinators absolutely love. The main thing to know: give it some space. It’s better for a mid-bed or back-of-bed planting than a tiny foundation bed, and if it starts getting too big, it’s easy to divide and share.

🌸 Does your landscape only look its best for a few weeks each year?

You’re not alone.

One of the biggest mistakes homeowners make is buying plants based only on what’s blooming at the garden center that day. The result? A spectacular spring… followed by months of “just green.”

In this week’s video, Coach Matt shares the same landscape design strategy professionals use to create continuous color from spring through fall—using the right combination of flowers, foliage, shrubs, trees, and seasonal interest.

📄 We also created a brand-new Yard Coach Continuous Color Guide to help you start planning your own landscape.
