Continuing our series of pushing the bounds of growing carnivorous plants, Drew is explaining the boundaries of Sarracenia dormancy. In this video, he answers:

🌱 Does a Sarracenia actually HAVE to go dormant?

☀️ What does it take to actually trigger dormancy?

❄️ How cold of temperatures can a Sarracenia take and still live?

🔥 How warm can a Sarracenia be and still go/remain dormant?

Let’s talk basals! In this video, we’re running through the basics of propagating a Nepenthes basal.
•
Basals are offshoots, or new growth points, from the main Nepenthes vine. These can be left alone, or you can take cuttings and propagate “new” plants.
•
This demonstration shows how you could propagate the basal itself, leaving the main stem behind. The process is fairly simple:

(1) Cut or “pop” the basal from the main stem, getting as close as you can to the main stem and ensuring the cutting has plenty of its own established stem.

(2) Water the cutting into a new pot of substrate. Not mentioned in the video is this incredible stuff called cloning gel that you can use to assist the cutting in developing roots and establishing! It isn’t necessary, but can be of great help.

(3) Bag acclimate your cutting. Since it lacks roots, giving it plenty of humidity and moisture will help it establish.

These steps can also help followed by cutting the main plant and leaving the basal behind, attached to the main root system.
•
We hope this helps! If you have any questions or your own experiences to share, drop them in the comments.

Carnivero is a small business based out of Austin, TX. Our nursery boasts 13 full-time on-site employees, not including our remote team members and part-time storefront associates! Of those 13 people, there are a select few whose focus is handle the HUNDREDS of orders we receive every week from across four different sales channels that we sell on nationwide. They one handle the pulling, packaging, and shipping of your plants with an emphasis on plant safety. Whether it’s chilly where you life or your plant decided to grow an awkward pitcher, we use materials like sphagnum moss, poly fill, peanuts, insulation, heat packs, and more to get your plant to you as safely and comfortably as we possibly can. This group is also responsible for preparing your local pick ups, stocking our storefront with all new carnivores, and helping ensure the nursery is show-ready, among other countless tasks that help keep Carnivero running. On this day in particular, the team is packing some final orders, getting the storefront ready for the weekend, and putting everything in place to get us loaded up smoothly for PlantCon—just a little behind the scenes for your Thursday!

It’s that time of year 🍂 Leaves change color, football is on TV, and some carnivorous plants start to go dormant.
•
A question that is often asked—and hotly debated—is whether Venus flytraps are required to experience dormancy. In this video, Carnivero founder and carnivorous plant expert Drew Martinez settles the answer once and for all.
