Haven Permaculture LLC

Haven Permaculture LLC We combine permaculture design with practical construction experience for install Wherever your land is, we can put a plan to it.

A regenerative land design and consulting practice that helps landowners develop working systems prioritizing water management, food production, and family self-sufficiency. Haven Permaculture designs and installs regenerative, edible landscapes — food forests, gardens, native and pollinator plantings, water systems, swales, and whole-property permaculture design. We turn yards into food that feeds a family for decades, and land that gets richer every season instead of poorer. We install across the Ozarks and all of Missouri — from the southern hills up to Trenton — and we design properties nationwide, across the continental United States, Alaska and Hawaii included. Haven Permaculture was founded by Jamon Mysliwiec — The Independent American Gardener — an international permaculture educator and designer, and founder of TIAG Communities. What we build for you, we live ourselves on our own 20 acres, and we've done design work for families across the country. Design, build, and upkeep under one roof. This year I was met with a challange I saw coming but could not solve with money and tools.
The YARD. We arrived with the land covered in Poison Hemlock. It has taken 2 springs to transition that to chicory, amaranth, dandelion, clover, and a variety of prairie grasses. In the process, however, this year my lawn mower, w**d whackers, and push powers, and vehicles, all died in a stretch of 2 months or so. Leaving me completely at a loss for tools, with big expenses on vehicles crippling my ability to pay for fixes, even cheap ones. I was a mechanic for 8 years, I can fix anything with a little time and resources. So this proved to be very difficult for me this year, having a new property with tall overgrowth and no equipment to manage it and no resources to remedy the equipment.

That combination had me reflecting on my dependency on these things. My Property is one being planned from scratch, an open field and fresh construction, disturbed seed banks, rocky poor soil, and extremely limited funding. This wouldnt be top big a deal, if everything didnt beak at the same time. Im sure the chances of that are slim, but suffice it to say I am that one in a million most days.

Anyway, this is why it is so important to design for INDEPENDENCE. The Independent American Gardener initiatives include an element of community barter and trade. This came into the picture for us when a good friend loaned us his lawn mower and we were able to chop and drop a perfectly timed adult stand that munched out soils right before the big heat wave set in recently. That left 1 to 2 inches of mulch across our grounds, where we cut, and tall stands of chicory where we skipped it, and pasture grasses where we left it alone entirely for the cows.

This observation of experience, coupled with the wars and spikes in oil prices, shifted my focus for next spring into a gasoline and diesel independent lawn and garden plan, much like what we started with intentionally some 6 years ago. Specifically, manual crimping, ground covers and heavy mulching on even unplanted zones simply for w**d mitigation, grazing routes and fence line perennials for edge value, big leaves make shade, shade reduced w**dseed germination, thick mulch suppresses growth of w**d starts, preserves moisture and keeps soil fluffy, ideal for fruits and vegetables, etc. Etc. While all of this has always been in the plan, its front and center for spring. Its interesting how what was true 6 years ago is still true today:

Fragile systems will eventually fail, and when they do, everything that depends on them will too.

The lesson?

Design for Independence this winter, so your family can manage the unexpected this spring.

I believe you have less than a year to Make this happen for your family at home. The next 48 months are going to change America as we know it, and the world, in ways you do not currently see coming. Fear is a weapon, but awareness is key to intention, and you must design your life as you intend it to be, or you will be found wanting in a time of need, having no direction, wandering aimlessly, seeking things here and there... Our foundational pattern is built ont he basis of family self-sufficiency because it starts at HOME. you must make your HOME a HAVEN, that is why we founded Haven Permaculture LLC to teach and help you develop your regeneative land project to catch rain, grow food, store energy, and produce a surplus you can barter and trade when money no longer matters, or is scarce, or in other contexts simply not the cmode of exchange for a given time. During world war 2, Victory gardens made the difference between starvation and survival for many families. World war 3 will not be so kind. Annual agriculture is NOT the solution. Instead, Regenerative, Perennial, Self-sustaining Ecosystem based gardens called FOOD FORESTS designed in symbiotic relationships withyour local climate, land, and biology will support you, your loved ones, and your community. The More Homes we build this way down a street, the more ability an entire city has to feed itself from within. Fruit trees come back each year by themselves, perennial herbs bare medicine year after year, and every living thing on earth eats freely from nature, except people. It is not because we are not able, it is because we do not know what we are looking at anymore.

I aim to change that for my family, AND yours.

blank land syndrome isn't a motivation problem
name the freeze owning raw acreage creates paralysis when every road, garden, pond, and building feels like an expensive decision
read before choosing elevation, soil, climate, and flood information reveal constraints that casual walks and optimistic sketches often miss
buy back certainty a focused $24 property report can replace years of trial and error by showing opportunities, limits, and sensible starting points
choose one next move use the findings to rank projects, protect your budget, and turn intimidating acreage into a sequence you can actually follow

The first earthwork on your property isn't a shovel It's learning where the water already wants to go
1. Watch the whole watershed Rain falling uphill can decide what happens downhill, even across parts of your acreage you never planned to use
2. Read the contours before digging Contour lines reveal where runoff accelerates, slows, spreads, and collects before a swale changes the pattern
3. Give overflow somewhere to go A catchment feature without a safe overflow path can turn one heavy storm into erosion, saturation, or a damaged road
4. Place structures after the water map Homes, driveways, ponds, gardens, and fences should work with drainage instead of blocking or redirecting it blindly
5. Let water choose the growing zones The best orchard or garden location depends on moisture, soil, frost, slope, and access, not just the sunniest clearing
6. Build in the order the land can support Map water first, test your assumptions, then phase earthworks and planting so each improvement strengthens the next one

your first homestead project should probably be watching the rain
trace where the water slows down, spreads out, and leaves the property
that pattern tells you where a swale can hold water instead of sending it downhill
then place gardens, orchards, and paths around the water system, not across it
earthworks first means shaping the land to catch what the sky already gives you

the whole-property sequencing test
start with constraints map slope, drainage, soils, flood exposure, climate, and existing features before deciding what your property can realistically support
build the backbone plan water movement and storage first, because every future road, growing area, shelter, and livestock system depends on reliable access
phase by dependency schedule projects according to what must happen first, so later improvements build on finished infrastructure instead of forcing expensive rework
match your capacity choose phases around available money, labor, skills, and time, turning a complete property vision into steady progress you can actually sustain
plan once, build wisely a coordinated masterplan shows where everything belongs, what comes next, and how each affordable phase moves the whole property forward
