Leaf-footed.

That is the inch-long brown bug on the last tomatoes with what looks like a scrap of leaf on each back leg, and it is not the stink bug from the news, though it is a cousin and it smells about the same if you squeeze it.

It sucks juice through a straw. On a green tomato that leaves a cloudy yellow patch under the skin, and on a young one it can make the fruit drop. That is the whole bill, and on a September plant it is a small one.

It does not bite. It carries nothing. It is not the kissing bug, which has no leaf on its legs. By October it is in the woodpile or under the shed with a hundred others, asleep until May. If there are too many, go out in the cool of the morning when they are slow, and knock them into a jar of soapy water. No spray reaches them anyway.

Look for the leaf on the leg. That is the tell. 🍅
