Important Update on Delivery & Installation Services

At Malkin Appliances, we have always worked hard to keep our prices fair — not only on the appliances we sell, but also on delivery, installation and removal.

Since COVID, the cost of providing these services has increased significantly. While many retailers have passed these increases along to customers, we have absorbed much of the additional expense for as long as possible.

Unfortunately, we have reached the point where we can no longer absorb all of these increases.

One of the largest factors has been the cost of insurance for delivery and installation companies. New York State-approved insurance rate increases, combined with changing liability costs, have resulted in some insurance costs coming close to doubling over the last four years. These are costs that our delivery and installation providers must carry in order to properly insure their employees and the work they perform in our customers' homes.

As these insurance and liability costs continue to rise, some installation companies are also declining certain higher-risk installations altogether because the potential liability has made the work economically impractical.

What does this mean for our customers?

For most standard deliveries and installations, the increase will remain relatively small — generally less than 15%, or approximately $10–$25 depending on the service.

Removal of an old appliance will increase by approximately $5 to help offset the required recycling and disposal costs we incur.

There are also certain installations where increased liability and insurance requirements are changing what our regular installation teams can perform:

• In-wall air conditioners: Second-story installations may no longer be available through our regular installation teams, depending on location and accessibility.

• Large-capacity air conditioners: Installation costs for heavier units, particularly those above 25,000 BTUs, have increased because of additional labor, insurance and liability requirements.

• Dishwashers: Certain installations involving non-standard plumbing, electrical connections or special hookups may require a specialized contractor.

• Built-in refrigeration: These installations will require a properly authorized and insured specialty installation team. Because fewer companies are performing this type of work, scheduling may sometimes exceed four days.

In situations where we cannot coordinate an installation, we will maintain a list of independent licensed contractors who may be able to perform the work. These contractors will be independent and will not be affiliated with Malkin Appliances.

If you are a licensed and insured contractor interested in being included on our contractor referral list, please email me at [email protected]. We are particularly interested in contractors serving Nassau, Suffolk, Queens and the surrounding New York metropolitan area who can handle appliance-related installation work.

We don't believe our customers should be surprised by these changes at the time of delivery. We want to be upfront about what is changing, what it will cost, and why.

Malkin Appliances will continue to do everything we can to keep delivery and installation prices as low as possible while making sure the people entering your home are properly insured and qualified to perform the work safely.

We appreciate your understanding and, most importantly, your continued support of a local, independent appliance dealer.

October tip worth saving: if you're doing a lot of fall cooking and baking this month, an induction cooktop is worth knowing about. ⚡

It heats up faster than gas or electric, gives you precise temperature control for soups and sauces, and the flat surface makes cleanup between dishes so much easier. A game changer for heavy cooking seasons! 🍲

It’s difficult to see another small, independent appliance store close its doors.

This particular store may not be in our backyard, but its story feels very close to home. Every time we see another family-owned or independent business disappear, it is a reminder of just how much our communities have changed.

For generations, small businesses have been part of the fabric of our neighborhoods. They are the places where someone knows your name, remembers what you purchased, answers the phone when something goes wrong, and actually cares whether you are happy after the sale.

Independent appliance dealers aren't asking for anyone's business simply because we're small. We earn it.

We compete on price. We know our products. We help customers make the right decision for their homes and their budgets. We solve problems that don't always fit neatly into an online form or a corporate customer-service script. And when something goes wrong, we don't want to pass you from department to department—we want to make it right.

But that doesn't mean we're perfect every time.

Running a small business requires an incredible amount of work, and sometimes we simply don't live up to what we know we're capable of. A difficult installation may take longer to schedule than it should. A phone call might not get returned as quickly as we would like. Paperwork may get delayed, or something that should have been handled today gets pushed to tomorrow.

It's not because we don't care. In fact, most of the time it's exactly the opposite. We care deeply about getting it right. There are simply days when there aren't enough hours to do everything as quickly or as perfectly as we would like.

The difference is that when we fall short, there are real people behind the business who care about fixing it. Our name is on the door. Our reputation is personal. We have to look our customers in the eye, and we know that the way we handle a problem is every bit as important as the original sale.

Because to a small business, you aren't an order number.

You're our customer. You're our neighbor. You're the person we may see at the supermarket, at a local restaurant, at school events, or walking down the street. Our reputation isn't built in a corporate boardroom hundreds of miles away. It's built right here in the community, one customer at a time.

We understand why people shop online and at big-box stores. Convenience matters. Price matters. We know we have to compete for every sale, and we do.

But sometimes it's worth remembering what happens when the small businesses disappear.

One closing doesn't seem like it changes a community. Then another closes. And another. Eventually, the stores that sponsored the Little League teams, donated to local organizations, employed local families, supported other neighborhood businesses, and knew their customers personally are simply gone.

And once they're gone, they're very difficult to bring back.

So before clicking "Buy Now," give a local independent business an opportunity. Ask us for a price. Ask us what we can do. You may be surprised at how competitive we are—and you'll know there is a real person standing behind your purchase.

Small businesses don't survive because people feel sorry for them. We survive because our communities give us the opportunity to earn their business.

To everyone who continues to shop locally, who gives a small business an opportunity to compete, and who sometimes gives us a little patience when we aren't perfect: thank you. It means more than you probably realize.

Have you thought about how a microwave built into your island or lower cabinetry can completely free up counter space and make your kitchen feel larger? 🤔✨

They're especially useful in open layouts where every inch of counter real estate matters. Pull-out access also makes them easier to use for kids and shorter family members!
