What is it about film noir photography that makes even an ordinary scene feel like something is about to go very wrong?

It’s usually not the camera.

It’s the light.

Hard shadows, deep blacks, narrow pools of illumination, strong contrast and a deliberate sense of mystery are what give film noir images their tension.

And the useful thing is that you don’t need a 1940s movie set to create the look.

A single light source, a dark room, a doorway, a street lamp or even a carefully placed shadow can be enough to completely change the mood of a photograph.

If you’ve never tried shooting in this style, it’s a brilliant exercise in learning how much atmosphere you can create with very little.

**Have you ever deliberately tried to make a photograph look like a frame from an old noir movie?**
