Severe weather is forecasted in the Gulf region later this week as Tropical Storm Isaias is projected to make landfall as a hurricane. Louisiana homeowners are urged to take proactive steps to protect their homes and families in the event of severe weather.

The LSU AgCenter LaHouse Research and Education Center recommends the following steps:
● Clean gutters and downspouts to help water drain properly.
● Secure loose items outdoors to prevent damage in high winds.
● Check your roof and windows for weak points. Patch up sections of your roof that are missing shingles and cover your windows if needed.
● Make sure your family has supplies in the event of a power outage

In recognition of the National Day of Service and Remembrance, our September Built to Serve programming reached approximately 157 youth participants across multiple events. Youth learned how Louisiana homes and communities can better prepare for severe weather, how wetlands help protect communities during storms, what Louisiana wildlife need to thrive, and how teamwork and communication help turn ideas into action.

Across these events, youth increased understanding of storm readiness, wetlands, wildlife habitat, teamwork, community service, and the role of nesting boxes in conservation. They reported high confidence in explaining wildlife habitat needs and identifying actions people can take to prepare for severe weather, and both said they were likely to participate in another wildlife or conservation service project.

I think Option 3 is the strongest because it sells the mission first, which is usually what motivates the people who end up being the best AmeriCorps volunteers.

Exciting News for LaHouse!

LaHouse Research and Education Center has been awarded a Healthy Communities Grant to support food waste reduction education in our community.

This funding will help us create new hands-on exhibits, demonstrations, and outreach programs that teach practical ways to reduce food waste, save money, and support a healthier environment.

We are grateful for this opportunity and look forward to providing new educational resources that will benefit families, schools, and communities across Louisiana.

Together, we can make a difference, one household at a time!
