🌳🍁TREE TIP 🍁🌳

⚠️ ARE YOU ACCIDENTALLY DAMAGING YOUR TREES WITHOUT EVEN REALIZING IT? ⚠️

Fall cleanup is underway here in Northeastern Pennsylvania! 🍂

As homeowners begin raking leaves, spreading mulch, and preparing their yards for winter, there’s one common mistake we see that can cause long-term damage to otherwise healthy trees!

🌲 PILE IT HIGH? NOT AROUND YOUR TREES!

Did you know that piling mulch, leaves, or soil directly against the trunk of a tree can actually do more harm than good?

🌳 HERE’S WHY!

🍂 Trapped Moisture: Thick layers of mulch or wet leaves pressed against the trunk can hold moisture against the bark, creating conditions that encourage decay.

🍄 Fungal Problems: Excess moisture around the trunk can encourage certain fungal diseases.

🐭 Rodent Damage: Deep piles of mulch or leaves can provide shelter for mice and voles that may chew on the bark during winter.

🌲 Hidden Root Problems: Burying the base of a tree can hide important warning signs, including root flare damage, girdling roots, and decay.

⚠️ WHAT IS THE ROOT FLARE?

The root flare is the area at the bottom of the trunk where the tree begins widening into its main roots.

That area should remain visible and should NOT be buried under a mound of mulch or soil!

🍁 HERE’S HOW TO MULCH THE RIGHT WAY:

✅ Spread mulch approximately 2–3 inches deep.

✅ Extend the mulch outward in a wide, flat ring when space allows.

✅ Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk.

✅ Avoid piling soil, leaves, or wood chips against the bark.

✅ Keep the root flare exposed.

🚨 DID YOU KNOW?

Those big piles of mulch stacked against tree trunks are often called “mulch volcanoes.”

They might look neat and landscaped, but over time they can contribute to serious tree health problems!

❄️ WITH WINTER APPROACHING HERE IN NEPA…

Now is a great time to check the base of your trees before snow covers everything up!

🌳🍂TREE TIP 🍂🌳

🚨 DEAD ASH TREES — A HIDDEN DANGER IN NORTHEASTERN PENNSYLVANIA! 🚨

Have you noticed dead or dying ash trees standing along roadsides, in backyards, or near homes throughout NEPA?

🌲 DID YOU KNOW?

Many of our ash trees have been severely affected by the Emerald Ash Borer, an invasive insect that feeds beneath the bark and disrupts the tree’s ability to transport water and nutrients.

Unfortunately, even after an ash tree dies, it can remain standing for years — giving homeowners a false sense of security!

⚠️ HERE’S WHAT MAKES DEAD ASH TREES SO DANGEROUS:

🌳 Brittle Branches: As dead ash trees deteriorate, their limbs can become extremely brittle and break with little warning.

🍂 Weakening Trunks: Decay and deterioration can reduce the tree’s structural strength, increasing the risk of failure.

💨 Wind Damage: Strong winds can cause dead limbs or entire sections of weakened trees to break.

❄️ Snow & Ice: Heavy winter weather adds additional weight and stress to already compromised trees.

🚨 Unpredictable Breakage: Severely deteriorated ash trees can be especially dangerous to climb, cut, or remove without the proper equipment and experience.

🌲 HOW CAN YOU IDENTIFY A POSSIBLE ASH TREE PROBLEM?

Watch for:

⚠️ Large sections of dead branches
⚠️ Bark falling away from the trunk
⚠️ Small D-shaped exit holes in the bark
⚠️ Woodpecker damage exposing lighter-colored bark
⚠️ New sprouts growing from the lower trunk
⚠️ S-shaped tunnels underneath loose bark

🍁 WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT THIS NOW?

As temperatures begin dropping here in NEPA, we’re getting closer to the season of heavy snow, freezing rain, ice, and winter windstorms.

A dead tree standing today may not withstand the next major storm!

🏡 If you have a dead ash tree near your home, garage, driveway, power lines, or anywhere people regularly spend time, it’s important to have it professionally evaluated.

🚨 IMPORTANT: Never attempt to climb or cut a severely deteriorated ash tree yourself. Dead ash trees can fail unexpectedly, even during removal.

🌳🍂 TREE TIP 🍂🌳

⚠️ TWO TRUNKS, ONE TREE — COULD IT BE A HIDDEN DANGER? ⚠️

Have you ever noticed a tree on your property that splits into two large trunks?

It might look perfectly healthy, but some double-trunk trees can have a serious structural weakness that homeowners don’t even realize is there!

🌲 DID YOU KNOW?

When a tree develops two main trunks, they’re often referred to as co-dominant stems.

Depending on how those trunks are attached, the connection between them can sometimes be weaker than a typical branch attachment.

One of the biggest concerns is something called INCLUDED BARK.

🌳 WHAT IS INCLUDED BARK?

Included bark happens when bark becomes trapped between two growing stems instead of a strong wood-to-wood connection forming.

As the trunks grow larger and heavier, that weak attachment may become more likely to split under stress.

🍁 WARNING SIGNS TO WATCH FOR:

⚠️ A Tight V-Shaped Union: Two trunks growing close together with a narrow V-shaped connection may have included bark.

⚠️ Visible Cracks: Splitting or cracking where the trunks meet can indicate structural problems.

⚠️ Bulging or Swelling: Unusual growth around the union can sometimes indicate stress or a developing defect.

⚠️ One Trunk Leaning Away: A change in the position of either trunk could signal movement or damage.

⚠️ Previous Limb Failure: Old breaks or storm damage near the union deserve closer inspection.

💨 WHY IS THIS IMPORTANT IN NEPA?

With the strong winds we’ve been experiencing and winter quickly approaching, trees with weak trunk attachments may face additional stress from:

❄️ Heavy, wet snow
🧊 Ice accumulation
💨 Strong wind gusts
🌧️ Saturated soil and storms

🚨 HERE’S THE IMPORTANT PART!

Not every double-trunk tree is dangerous!

Many trees with multiple trunks remain structurally sound for decades.

However, a tree with included bark, cracking, or a compromised attachment should be evaluated — especially if it’s located near your house, garage, driveway, vehicles, or areas where people spend time.

🌲 A TREE CAN BE GREEN, FULL OF LEAVES, AND STILL HAVE A WEAK CONNECTION BETWEEN ITS TRUNKS!

Depending on the condition, professional pruning, structural support systems, monitoring, or removal may be recommended.

🍂 TODAY’S TAKEAWAY:

Just because two trunks have grown together for years doesn’t always mean they’re strongly attached!

Take a look around your property this fall. If you notice cracks, separation, or unusual growth where two trunks meet, don’t wait for a winter storm to find out how strong that connection really is.

🌳🍂 TREE TIP 🍂🌳

⚠️ FALLING LEAVES CAN REVEAL HIDDEN DANGERS IN YOUR TREES! ⚠️

As fall settles into Northeastern Pennsylvania and the leaves begin changing colors and dropping, it’s the perfect time to take a closer look at the trees surrounding your home and property!

🌲 DID YOU KNOW?

During the spring and summer, a full canopy of leaves can hide dead branches, cracks, broken limbs, and structural defects.

As those leaves fall away, problems that have been hiding all summer can become much easier to spot!

🍁 HERE’S WHAT TO LOOK FOR:

🌳 Dead Branches: Limbs with peeling bark, missing smaller twigs, or visible decay may be dead or dying. Remember, healthy trees naturally shed leaves too!

🍂 Cracked or Split Limbs: Look for visible cracks where large branches connect to the trunk. These areas can become weak points during storms.

🌲 Hanging Branches: Broken limbs caught in other branches can fall unexpectedly, even on a calm day.

🍄 Hollow Areas & Decay: Cavities, rotting wood, and certain types of fungal growth can indicate structural weaknesses.

🌳 Crossing or Rubbing Branches: Branches rubbing against each other can create wounds that allow decay organisms to enter.

💨 Old Storm Damage: The winds we’ve been experiencing may have damaged branches without bringing them all the way down.

🚨 WHY DOES THIS MATTER RIGHT NOW?

Winter is right around the corner here in NEPA!

❄️ Heavy, wet snow adds weight to branches.

🧊 Ice accumulation puts additional stress on weak limbs.

💨 Strong winter winds can cause already damaged branches to fail.

🏡 Trees hanging over homes, garages, driveways, vehicles, and other structures deserve extra attention.

⚠️ IMPORTANT: Never stand beneath a hanging limb or attempt to remove damaged branches near power lines. Have hazardous trees evaluated by a qualified professional.

🌳🍂 Tree Tip 🍂🌳

⚠️ LOOK DOWN! YOUR TREE’S ROOTS MAY BE TRYING TO TELL YOU SOMETHING! ⚠️

With the strong winds we’ve been experiencing here in Northeastern Pennsylvania, most homeowners are looking UP at their trees for broken branches and hanging limbs.

But did you know that some of the most serious warning signs can be found right at ground level?

🌲 HERE’S WHAT TO WATCH FOR:

🍂 Cracked or Raised Soil: Fresh cracks or soil lifting around the base of a tree could indicate that the root system is shifting.

🌳 Exposed or Uprooted Roots: Roots that have recently lifted out of the ground may indicate a tree is losing stability.

🍄 Mushrooms Around the Base: Certain fungi can indicate root or trunk decay, even when the tree looks healthy above ground.

🌲 A New Lean: If a tree suddenly starts leaning or appears to be leaning more than it used to, this could be a sign of root failure.

💨 Movement at the Base: While trees naturally sway in the wind, the ground and root plate should not be noticeably lifting or shifting.

🚨 DID YOU KNOW?

A tree doesn’t have to be dead to fall! Even a tree with a beautiful, full canopy can have a compromised root system.

And with winter approaching, heavy snow, ice, saturated ground, and strong winds can put additional stress on weakened trees.

⚠️ If you notice any of these warning signs, keep your distance and have the tree professionally evaluated. Don’t attempt to push, pull, or straighten it yourself.

🌳💨 TREE TIP 💨🌳

🍁”BUT THE TREE LOOKED HEALTHY!” 🍁

One of the most common things we hear after a tree comes down is:

“But it was still green and looked completely healthy or it bloomed this year!”

Here’s the important part: A tree can have a full canopy of green leaves and still have serious structural problems.

Strong winds put tremendous force on the trunk, limbs, and root system. Problems that may have gone unnoticed for years can suddenly become the reason a tree or large limb fails.

⚠️ Hidden problems can include:
• Internal decay or a hollow trunk
• Weak or cracked branch unions
• Root decay below the ground
• Previous storm damage
• Dead sections high in the canopy
• Included bark between large stems
• Mushrooms or fungi indicating possible decay
• Damaged or restricted root systems

🌲 GREEN DOESN’T ALWAYS MEAN SAFE.

A tree can continue producing leaves even when portions of the trunk or root system have been compromised.

After the winds we’ve been having, take a few minutes to look around your property. If you notice a new lean, cracks, hanging branches, exposed roots, movement around the base, cavities, or anything that simply doesn’t look right, it’s worth having the tree inspected.

Winter is coming, and wind, heavy snow, and ice can put even more stress on an already weakened tree.

🍂 Don’t judge a tree by its leaves. What’s happening inside the trunk or underneath the ground can matter just as much as what you can see.

10/07/2026

🌳💨TREE TIP — HIGH WINDS & YOUR TREES💨🌳

With the strong winds we’re experiencing, keep an eye on the trees around your home, driveway, vehicles, power lines, and other structures.

Wind doesn’t always have to knock a tree completely over to cause a dangerous situation. It can expose problems that were already hiding inside the tree.

⚠️ After heavy winds, watch for:
• Large limbs that are cracked, hanging, or newly broken
• Trees that suddenly appear to be leaning more than before
• Fresh cracks or splits where large limbs meet the trunk
• Soil lifting, cracking, or heaving around the base of the tree
• Dead limbs caught in the canopy
• Hollow or decaying areas in the trunk
• Trees swaying or moving at the root plate more than surrounding trees

🌲 IMPORTANT: If you see a hanging limb or a tree that looks unstable, do not stand underneath it or try to remove it yourself. A damaged tree can shift or fail without much warning, especially while the wind is still blowing.

Fall is already a good time to inspect your trees — and strong October winds can make existing weaknesses much easier to spot.

If something doesn’t look right, have it looked at before the next windstorm, heavy rain, ice, or snow adds even more stress.

Protect your home, vehicles, family, and property — don’t wait until a questionable tree becomes an emergency

10/06/2026

🌳 ~DAILY TREE TIPS~🌳

⚠️ LEANING TREES

Here’s one of the first questions we ask about a leaning tree:

HAS IT ALWAYS LEANED…OR IS THE LEAN NEW? 👀

Some trees naturally grow at an angle and can remain that way for many years.

But a tree that has recently started leaning—or appears to be leaning more than it used to—deserves attention.

Take a look around the base for:

⚠️ Fresh cracks in the soil
🌱 Soil lifting on one side
🌳 Exposed or damaged roots
🍄 Fungal growth
🪵 Decay or cavities
💧 Saturated or unusually wet ground

Then ask yourself another important question:

If this tree DID fail, what could it hit?

🏠 Your house?
🚗 Vehicles?
🏚️ Garage or shed?
🛣️ Driveway or road?

A leaning tree doesn’t automatically mean it needs to be removed.

But a NEW or CHANGING lean shouldn’t be ignored.

⚠️ DEAD & HANGING LIMBS — LOOK UP!

That dead branch hanging over your driveway might not look like a big deal today…

Until the wind picks up. 💨

Dead, broken and partially attached limbs can remain suspended in a tree for quite some time. Some are even caught in neighboring branches and aren’t easy to spot from the ground.

👀 Watch for:

🌿 Branches without leaves while surrounding limbs are healthy
🪵 Missing or peeling bark
⚠️ Cracked or partially broken limbs
🌳 Branches hanging at unusual angles
🍂 Dead branches caught in the canopy

Pay EXTRA attention when they’re hanging above your home, driveway, vehicles, walkways or other areas people regularly use.

With fall here and winter approaching, snow, ice and wind can put additional stress on an already compromised limb.

Just because it survived the last storm doesn’t mean it’ll survive the next one.

🍄🌳 DAILY TREE TIP🌳🍄

SEE MUSHROOMS AROUND YOUR TREE? PAY ATTENTION!

Mushrooms might look harmless—but when certain fungi repeatedly appear on the trunk, around the base or directly from woody roots, they can sometimes be associated with decaying wood.

And that’s important because the base and root system are what help support the entire tree.

👀 Things worth noticing:

🍄 Mushrooms growing directly from the trunk
🍄 Fungal growth around the root flare
🪵 Soft or decaying wood near the base
🌳 Cavities around ground level
⚠️ A tree beginning to lean
🌱 Changes or movement in the surrounding soil

Mushrooms alone don’t automatically mean a tree is dangerous or needs to be removed.

Different fungi mean different things, and some aren’t harming the tree at all.

But if you’re seeing fungal growth combined with decay, cavities, dead limbs or a changing lean, it’s worth having the tree looked at.

📸 Helpful tip: If the mushrooms disappear before someone can inspect the tree, take clear pictures of them first!
