💧Happy Anniversary to the Clean Water Act!💧

On October 18, 1972, the Clean Water Act became law, marking a turning point in the protection and restoration of our nation's rivers, streams, lakes, and wetlands. Over the past five decades, this landmark legislation has helped reduce water pollution, improve water quality, and protect the natural resources that support our communities, wildlife, and way of life!

🌎 Let's continue working together to keep our waters clean, healthy, and resilient for future generations 🌎

📚💧 Happy Wordy Wednesday💧📚

This week's word is Watershed!

Watershed (noun): An area of land where all rainfall and snowmelt drain to the same body of water, such as a stream, river, lake, or bay.

🌎 A great example is the Chesapeake Bay Watershed, which spans parts of six states (including Maryland) and Washington, D.C. Every drop of rain that falls within this watershed eventually flows through local streams and rivers into the Chesapeake Bay. That means activities happening miles away from the Bay can still impact its water quality.

🌧️ Whether rain falls on a farm, a neighborhood street, or a forest trail, the water is connected through the watershed. That's why protecting local streams and reducing pollution upstream helps keep the Chesapeake Bay healthy downstream.

💡 Remember: We all live in a watershed!

Today, let's learn about and celebrate the Indigenous peoples that call the Chesapeake Bay home!
Harford County Government

Long before European colonists arrived, Indigenous peoples called the Chesapeake Bay region home. For thousands of years, their communities have been connected to the Bay’s lands and waters.
Today, Indigenous nations continue to preserve their cultures, care for their ancestral homelands, and contribute to the region’s future.
This Indigenous Peoples’ Day, learn more about the original inhabitants of the Chesapeake region at https://www.cbf.org/stories/the-original-inhabitants-of-our-lan.

We're all for seasonal decor, but please choose reusable and sustainable options whenever possible. Making choices to skip things like fake spiderwebs outside are simple things you can do to help wildlife. If you still want to have the spooky feel of fake spiderwebs why not take it inside and after Halloween put it in storage to reuse next year.

While most natives are past their peak bloom, be on the lookout for these flowers that provide a pop of color to this early fall:
🌸Asters
🌼Goldenrod
🪻Mountain mint

These natives are not only beautiful, they also provide a late-season source of nutrition to local pollinators like native 🦋butterflies and 🐝bees!
