As a solo operator, I consider myself fortunate not to have to manage the annual hiring and layoff cycle that my friends in the lawn mowing business face.

Winter lawn service isn't the "free money for doing nothing" that some homeowners imagine. To retain experienced full-time employees, these business owners must still manage payroll, staffing, and weekly service routes—even when mowing frequency drops to every other week.

Even this past spring, the drought created difficult decisions: "The grass is burned up. Do we mow it or not?"

Most small business owners would much rather have consistent, year-round demand than continually navigate these drastic seasonal highs and lows.

As my 30-year high school reunion approaches, I never imagined I’d be living in an era when “do your own research” could be treated as heresy by the very people who taught us to think for ourselves.

Thankfully it's pretty rare but it does happen.
