One client's children and grandchildren rarely visited their earlier homes. They never felt made for staying a while.

On their equestrian estate, the family now tells me their kids and grandkids actually want to come and stay. Two guest houses, a wing wrapped around a pool and courtyard in a U shape, and a world-class barn that feels like part of the home.

That is successful design: a true representation of the family.

How intuitively you move through your home, where the staff circulate, where the second kitchen sits: there is a domino effect to daily life that most homes underestimate. Get it wrong and a beautiful house becomes exhausting to live in.

The wallcovering on this fireplace wall came from a single production run, and the schedule says so on purpose.

Textured wallcoverings are dye-matched within a run and vary between runs. So the record holds the manufacturer, the pattern, the run quantity, and the overage that stays on site after installation. Years from now, when a panel gets damaged behind a bracket or a section is opened for service, nobody is hunting for a discontinued pattern. The record names it and the attic stock covers it.

The same sheet carries the aged metal panels either side of the firebox, the slat ceiling above, and the clad volume the television sits in. A television changes every few years. The opening does not, so the drawing holds the opening size, the ventilation, and the bracket blocking rather than a note about one model.

Documentation is what makes a finished room maintainable.

Ask the person who runs a large house how something works and the answer often comes from memory, or a text thread from two years ago, or an email somebody sent before they left.

None of that is the staff's fault. It is what happens when the interiors, the wellness thinking and the way the house operates are handled by different people at different times, and nobody writes it down in one place.

One team carrying all three is what lets a house run without anyone having to remember: https://nuanceinteriors.com/risk-wellness-advisory/

I was born and raised in Dubai. My father is an environmental biologist and my mother loves art and holistic medicine, so I grew up close to nature and beauty at the same time.

We traveled across Europe and North America, and I remember walking into cathedrals and galleries as a child and feeling something shift in me. There is a physiological response to awe, and I still feel it as an adult.

Years later I realized we almost never feel that at home. Beautiful spaces, materials and natural light can create the same experience in a house, and that missed opportunity became my work.

Three trades meet in the first six feet of this house, so the drawing goes out in color and each one reads its own scope.

The door contractor reads the pivot door and its swing. The stair builder reads tread depth, riser height, and where the open stringer meets the wall. The electrician reads the picture light over the door and the pendant drop in the stairwell, with the backing located before the ceiling closes. The aluminum, the wood, and the wallcovering all carry codes pointing to schedule lines.

Because the drawing is measured rather than estimated, the flooring quantity comes off the real surface with the cuts the layout needs. An entry is the worst place to run short of material, since it is the first thing anyone sees and you cannot close it off while more is on order.

Building a truly non toxic home is still complex here, because our agencies have not built the infrastructure that Europe and Canada have. That is why we source close to half of our materials and furnishings from Europe, where the certifications actually protect the people living with them.

The ceiling fan in this room is a coordination problem, not a purchase.

It hangs from a plane that also carries recessed lighting. It needs backing sized for something that moves, not something that just hangs there. Its blades have to clear the mirrored doors and the shelving beside it. All three get settled on the drawing, with the fan located against the millwork below rather than the middle of the room.

The sconces on the marble slab are the same kind of problem. A sconce mounted on stone needs its box located before the slab is cut, because that hole is made in the fabrication shop. Drilling a finished slab on site is possible, and it is not something anyone wants to watch.

Air movement and light are part of how a room supports the person using it, so they get drawn.

James Clear describes life as four burners: family, friends, work and health. You cannot keep all four on high.

Most of the families I work with have had work on high for a very long time, and when they run a business together the other three rarely get their turn. That is how burnout builds.

I'm delighted to share that I've been invited to speak at Longevity Is Culture in Miami on November 5th hosted by Courtney Lukitsch from Longevity Design Leaders.
The event brings together leaders across architecture, design, development, and wellness to explore how the built environment can play a greater role in advancing human well-being and longevity.

I'll be joining fellow industry leaders for a conversation about how we can create homes that support not only the way people live today, but their health, independence, and quality of life for decades to come.

It's encouraging to see these conversations gaining momentum among the architects, builders, and developers shaping the next generation of residential environments.

I'm looking forward to contributing my perspective on restorative interiors and learning from the expertise of others across disciplines.
