Is Character the New Luxury? This is an idea I have been thinking about a lot lately. Over the past decade we have seen “new and perfect” take the lead but in the past few years I am hearing clients say they want their homes to feel collected and lived in… even when those homes are new or freshly renovated.

It’s almost like the past era of modern, neutral design has cleansed our palettes too much and we are now returning to what interiors were always meant to be. Our homes should have personality, unique qualities, interesting details and character.

Do you agree? Check out my latest Substack article to read more and let me know what you think!

Is Character the New Luxury? That’s an idea that I have been thinking about a lot lately. Over the past decade we have seen “new and perfect” take the lead but more and more over the past few years clients are wanting a more collected and lived-in home… even when that home is brand new or freshly renovated.

I think the previous modern era almost cleansed our palettes too much and we are getting back to the heart of what interiors we’re always meant to be. We want our homes to have personality, imperfections, unique qualities, and character.

I get asked about styling all the time - in fact, we just finished a styling session and have 2 more for clients next week! Styling can seem intimidating, BUT it is also one of my favorite ways to make your home feel personal! Details make all the difference and the small items are where you can get a little funky, add pops of color, bring in new textures and materials, and just sort of bend the rules if you want.

Don’t let styling overwhelm you… start with some good basics (we’ve got you covered at Sweet Home by SCD) and then collect the rest over time as you travel, or pop around your home town. Just keep your eyes open for things you love! They’ll find a spot in your home- I promise.

Tons of accessories you see here can be found at Sweet Home by SCD - link in bio - as well as furniture, lamps, pillows, etc. go check it out.

One of my favorite things about being an interior designer is that I get to embrace new styles and new designs with each project! Lucky me 🤍 Since no two clients are the same, we win to make each house we work on feel like home to them. We want to create a space that reflects what they love and the memories that they hope to make.

That looks like getting a lot of input from each client and then leaning into their unique vision while still maintaining the classic, southern elements that SCD brings to every home.

Kensington project - these clients are both artists. Her medium is paint, his is music and horticulture. They wanted a home that was more colorful and moody with lots of mixed patterns and unique details at every turn.

French classic - this client loves feminine, soft colors. She wanted her master suite to feel like the Ritz in Paris with elegant details and pale blues. A few of my favorite details are the antique inspired French double doors leading into the fully walnut-paneled master closet complete with checkerboard marble floor and wallpaper on the ceiling.

Equine Mountain - these client love (and have) horses on their property. They also both have a deep love of the mountains out west. So our goal was to design a home, set on some acreage, that would reflect the Rocky Mountain vibe that they adore but still feels at home outside of Birmingham Alabama.

Not pictured: their goats, chickens, geese, dogs, and turkeys 🤍

Which is your favorite??
