Hereโ€™s the latest from the National Weather Service as we continue Tracking the Tropics:

Hurricane Isaias is currently a Category 1 storm with maximum sustained winds of 85 mph, tracking Northeast at 10 mph. As of the latest update at 11:00 AM, Isaias is expected to strengthen to a Category 2 storm by tonight and turn northward, packing winds of 105 mph, and reach 110 mph by tomorrow morning.

The current track has Isaias hitting between Mississippi and the western Florida Panhandle tomorrow night at around 100 miles per hour.

A new study by Florida State University has investigated a new storm graphic developed by the NOAA NWS National Hurricane Center. The graphic adds watches and warnings for inland storms to the forecast cone. The study found that so-called โ€œnonexpertsโ€ using the revised graphic could better identify which inland areas are subject to a watch or warning.

Yet, it failed to improve risk assessment for storms and how to avoid endangerment.

โ€œWe had a simple question โ€“ do those changes actually help people understand what the graphic is telling them about the risk they face?โ€ Assistant Professor Elizabeth Ray, lead author of the FSU study, posited. โ€œOur findings suggest that even with an updated graphic, that misconception (that a wider cone equates to a bigger storm) can be hard to shake.โ€
