Honoring tradition while planning for the future. 🌵
GH2 partnered with the City of Prescott and local stakeholders including Prescott Frontier Days, the Yavapai County Fair, University of Arizona Extension Office, Prescott Farmer's Market, and representatives from the Prescott community to develop a comprehensive master plan for the 43-acre Rodeo/Fairgrounds, creating a long-term vision that supports rodeo operations, community events, agricultural education, and year-round programming. The plan focuses on improving circulation, parking, infrastructure, and overall functionality while preserving the site’s rich western heritage. Proposed enhancements include a new multi-use pavilion, covered arena and livestock event space, updated support facilities, agricultural demonstration areas, expanded parking solutions, and a new University of Arizona Cooperative Extension and community building. Through thoughtful planning and phased implementation strategies, this vision positions the fairgrounds as a vibrant community asset for generations to come.

Seeing the vision come to life is one of the most rewarding parts of the design process. Here's a look at how this project has progressed from concept imagery to construction on site at the Kentucky Exposition Center!

Living in the same building as your horses is a dream shared by many equestrians! Aside from ease of access, there’s something very peaceful and comforting about being able to see your horses, whether in their stalls or in turnout, from your home.

However, there are many design decisions to consider before moving ahead with a living space that’s connected to or above your barn, including:
▪️ Maintaining Proper Ventilation | Multi-story buildings with stalling on the ground floor require specific considerations to maintain the flow of air up and out. This is especially important over stalling areas.
▪️ Noise Levels | If your horses are stalled at night, it’s likely you’ll hear them throughout sleeping hours. Locating living areas, especially if they’re on an upper floor, away from stall areas helps reduce nighttime noise intrusion.
▪️ Dirt, Dust, and Odor Control | Even the tidiest of barns can produce dirt, dust, and odors! We, of course, design to mitigate these with proper ventilation and airflow, but the closer a living space is to your barn, the closer those barn *elements* are.
▪️ Fire Safety | ⚠️ saving the most important for last ⚠️ The most common cause of barn fires are ordinary combustibles, like hay, and the second most common cause is electrical fires, especially from anything with a heating element. Combining a barn that has a great deal of hay, with living areas that typically have a great deal of electrical equipment, simply increases fire risk.

We most often recommend physically separating your living area from your barn. For example, at this breeding facility in Michigan, we connected the living quarters to the barn - entering through the barn office- by a covered connector. This addressed the considerations listed above, provided protection on the short walk from the residence to the barn on days with poor weather, and allowed the owner to have fantastic views of both the barn and pastures.

Did you know that GH2 has a full-time, in-house cost estimator? ✏️📄💲

For us, cost control starts on a project’s first day. Our clients entrust us to be good stewards of their project budgets and cost control efforts are a fundamental part of our practice. We realize design decisions we make can significantly impact the available financial resources for a project, and this is a responsibility we take seriously. Our cost estimator works closely with our team on a day-to-day basis to adjust cost estimates in response to changing market conditions and material costs.

Scroll through to follow the life of a project! From master planning and concept design through full architectural services ending with completed photos after construction… with cost estimating each step along the way to inform design decisions.
