1840 Farm

1840 Farm I moved into an empty New England farmhouse twenty years ago. Three generations of my family call 1840 Farm home.

Tending to the needs of an old farm has taught me a lot and I can’t wait to share it all with you! Over a decade ago, three generations of my family made the life changing decision to move from our home in Kansas to the Seacoast of New Hampshire. A few years later, we purchased what was then an abandoned farm and began the difficult work of bringing it back to life. It’s no coincidence that it is located a mere 100 miles from the dairy farm that my great grandparents proudly called home. We began to offer our products for sale in 2011 in order to help support our farm financially. We never imagined that doing so would also support our family on a much deeper level. When our customers tell us how much they love our products and look forward to reading about our farm, it reminds us that our journey is not limited to those of us physically living here at 1840 Farm. Instead, it is made richer by inviting all of them to take part in our daily adventures no matter where they might call home. Interacting with the members of the 1840 Farm Community online on a daily basis only reinforces that belief. I love reading about their experiences as much as I enjoy sharing mine. Our Mercantile Shop contains handmade items that we make and use here at 1840 Farm. I hope that you will enjoy welcoming these products into your home as much as we enjoy sharing them with you. I wasn’t sure what to make for dinner tonight until I saw Bradcanmakeit make cacio e pepe beans. It was perfect for this rainy, cold day. They were so good with toasted sourdough bread.

It is a glorious afternoon here. Sunshine and 70 degrees was all the invitation I needed to make an iced latte, grab my latest knitting project, and head out to the front porch. If anyone needs me, this is where I’ll be until it’s time to make dinner!

It’ll be in the 30s overnight, so these cherry tomatoes are going to be picked green, loaded into my harvest basket, and brought inside. Some of them will ripen in the kitchen and some of them will become the start of fried green tomato pasta. Mmm!

Every so often I need to remind myself that there is beauty all around me, that the real trick is in making time to receive it. I am leaving this here in case you might be able to use the same reminder.

It was 39 degrees when I woke up this morning. Fall is definitely here and the leaves are really starting to put on a colorful show. It’s peak foliage season North of us, but it’s just settling in here. Most of the leaves are still on the trees but it won’t be long until they’re on the ground with bare limbs left behind.

This is our sugar maple. It is always the prettiest tree on our property in the fall. The leaves turn gold and orange and leave a beautiful carpet on the grass below. The first touch of gold is just appearing. It won’t be long until I have plenty of golden foliage to share with you.

Leftovers from last night are on my plate for dinner tonight. Pan seared gnocchi with tomatoes and basil from the garden with bacon and garlic will be even more delicious tonight after a few hours in the fridge.

I’m not sure what we’re going to pull together for dinner tonight, but it’s going to feature these mayak eggs are definitely going to be the star of it. Might add them on top of a veggie stir fry and call it dinner.

The garden is still providing us with black cherry tomatoes and basil, so we’re having pan seared gnocchi with bacon, halloumi cheese, garlic, tomatoes, and basil for dinner. Grab the balsamic glaze and Parmesan cheese and let’s eat!

There was too much day in my day today. When dinner time finally came around, I simply didn’t have it in me to make anything. So, it was what I call a “Choose Your Own Adventure” night.

Everyone found something in the pantry, fridge, or freezer, and made their own meal. Mine was simple but tasty. I am always surprised at how good this tastes for no effort and a good nutritional profile. It was just what I needed tonight.
