Our team had a wonderful evening celebrating the Boston Design Guide 30th anniversary earlier this week with old friends, new partners, and a room full of our wonderful community!

It is such a privilege to have long term relationships in this industry - like the one we have with Melanie and the BDG team. Congratulations Boston Design Guide on 30 years!

It's National Cat Day, and we couldn't let the day pass without sharing one of our favorite project images!

Our Back Bay Brownstone project is filled with bespoke details designed specifically for these clients - including the furry members of the family. This custom cat cut-out in the cabinet door provides a fun and functional solution for keeping litter boxes and food bowls out of sight, without being too far removed.

And a shoutout to our purr-fect model in this photo! 🐈

“One Family, Five Homes: When the Design Process is as Rewarding as the Results”

In this sponsored feature in Ocean Home, LDa Principal Douglas Dick, AIA, LEED AP, reflects on a longstanding partnership spanning five homes and two generations of one family, highlighting the trust, creativity, and shared vision that have shaped each project—and made the design process as rewarding as the spaces themselves.

LDa developed a master plan for the new owners of over 100 acres of Berkshire farmland and woodlands, much of it protected by conservation restrictions. The approach balances long-term land stewardship with a phased vision for the property’s future.

The first step was creating a central home base for exploring the fields, woods, and brook. This space also supports the next phase of renovations to the main house.

A 1940s barn perched on a meadow knoll was thoughtfully transformed into a temporary residence and future guesthouse. The adaptive reuse honors the barn’s agricultural character while introducing modern comfort.

Inspired by the family’s travels, the interiors draw from the calm simplicity of a Swedish cabin. Removing ceilings, contemporary fixtures, and vintage details creates a layered dialogue between old and new.

A palette of bright white, cool black, and warm natural wood establishes a serene interior atmosphere. New insulation, heating, electrical systems, plumbing, and windows ensure the barn remains bright, cozy, and energy efficient year-round.

Yesterday we hosted an exciting panel called “The Modular Shift” as part of this year’s SoWa Design Day!

Thank you to everyone who joined us for this panel, and a special shoutout to our guest panelists David, Stuart, and Thatcher for an engaging and educational discussion on the benefits and future of modular housing. And of course, thank you to the SoWa Boston team and the New England Home team for putting together a wonderful 5th annual SoWa Design Day!

Finding that sweet spot to plant a house is key.

When one walks the land or a neighborhood and then decides to settle and build, the focus moves from “can we live here?” to “what will our story be?” and “how will we add to the story of this setting and place?”

The historic residence of the Deanery served as both a residence for the Episcopal Divinity School’s president as well as an event and reception space. Working closely with the president and the school administration, LDa’s interior renovation created a sophisticated and welcoming space to represent the school’s public face, while also providing a private respite for the president.

Last week, LDa Principal Kim Barnett headed down to Washington, D.C. to meet up with LDa associate Al Grigoli for the AIA Firm Management Symposium!

Not only did these two LDa-ers learn a ton, but they also had the opportunity to visit some of our favorite spots in DC. From national monuments to quiet moments of beauty, Kim and Al had a blast exploring the city (and they even got to see some LEGO renditions of well-known buildings in the city).

Now here is the challenge - can you name these DC spots (hint: some are more well known then others)?! Drop your best guesses in the comments below!

Join us on Thursday, October 15 at 2pm for SoWa Design Days!

We will be hosting a panel called The Modular Shift in collaboration with Housing Nantucket, KBS Builders, and Windover Construction, which explores how modular construction can reduce time and cost while expanding access to quality housing.

Featuring panelists David Armanetti, Thatcher Butcher, Kimberly Barnett, AIA, LEED AP, and Stuart Meurer and moderated by LDa Architecture & Interiors Associate Peter Makrauer - this panel brings together an architect, a modular manufacturer, a builder, and a mission-driven developer to explore how modular construction is reshaping housing delivery.

Using real projects at different scales, the discussion will examine where modular construction can create meaningful advantages in design, schedule, cost, and project delivery—as well as the challenges and decisions teams need to address early to realize those advantages.
