STUDIO PHILOSOPHY

Natural Modernism

The work of Flavin Architects is deeply rooted in the context in which our projects are sited; we call this approach to design Natural Modernism. The firm designs buildings that relate beautifully to their surroundings, with sculpted lines and timeless materials. With an aim to blur the distinction between inside and out, we use transparency and axial views to draw the eye to the natural world. We make innovative use of cutting-edge materials and techniques to conserve energy, water and the natural systems present on the site. The success of our projects depends on strong relationships and teamwork. Flavin Architects seeks to understand our clients' intentions so that we can translate these goals into a design tailored to them. Our hand-rendered drawings, models and computer simulations work together to ensure that our clients understand how a concept will work and accurately convey the project's look and feel when built.

Shaker Glen Brook Residence. For our current project in Metro Boston, MA, the material palette was inspired by our client’s vision for a warm, richly layered, and inviting home, and the Vastu principles that grounded the design. Green is a key design element woven throughout the spaces, thoughtfully balanced with warm wood tones, brushed nickel details, and creamy white surfaces to create a cohesive and sophisticated palette.

Wales House Outbuildings. Revisiting this 1958 Hoover and Hill house in Lincoln, MA, we converted the home’s existing garage into a guest house and added a separate carport and storage building.

The carport shares the original construction’s low-slope gable, with galvanized steel posts and I-beams updating Hoover’s post and beam structure. A wood lattice screen ventilates the building by day and gives it a soft glow at night.

Colin sketches the early concept for a new home in Newton, MA, set on a sloping site among mature trees. Designed to provide a “tree-house experience” from the second floor, a bridge from the carport leads into the private wing at entry.

Bare Hill Pond House. The site of this project in Harvard, MA was initially heavily paved-over. During the construction process, the asphalt was removed, returning much of the site to its natural ecology.

Flavin houses tread lightly, conserving energy, water, and natural systems while respecting the integrity of their surroundings.

Swan Studio. Designed for an artist, this studio and living space sits in the garden of the client’s 1949 house in the historic Six Moon Hill neighborhood in Lexington, MA. Inside, a high ceiling and full wall of glass bring the wooded surroundings into the room.

West Gloucester House. This Cape Ann home’s layout sits parallel to the contours of the hillside, its stacked massing and steel detailing evoking the industrial vernacular of the Gloucester waterfront.

The dark color on the exterior helps the house settle into its wooded site and to further integrate the home with its natural surroundings, we took our client’s suggestion to plant a tree that extends up through the second-floor deck.

Waldhaus. During a recent visit, our team toured the site of this current project— a home conceived as a garden in the woods that restores and enhances the surrounding ecology.  Three offset volumes follow the existing topography, linked by bridges that allow light and views to pass through the house.

Green Mountain Getaway. This house is tucked discreetly into its wooded site in the Mad River Valley of Vermont. Featuring triple glazed windows and super-insulated walls, this project was driven by sustainability.

The site design by extends the lines of the home into the landscape; stone terraces and retaining walls echo the surroundings.
