Astrophytum asterias cv. Hanazono 🌵

Hanazono, meaning “flower garden” in Japanese, is a special Astrophytum asterias cultivar known for producing extra woolly ar**les across the body, rather than having ar**les confined mainly along the ribs. As the plant matures, these additional ar**les can develop flower buds, creating the potential for multiple flowering points across the plant.

Young Hanazono seedlings may look fairly normal at first—the characteristic extra ar**les become more noticeable as they mature. Each seedling is genetically unique, so the amount, placement, and density of the Hanazono trait can vary from plant to plant.

🌼 Collector highlight: Select seedlings showing strong, widespread ar**le development for future breeding—the more established the Hanazono expression, the more dramatic the mature plant can become.

Thank you for following my work and growing journey at MadamCacti.com. 🌵💚 Your support means so much as I continue learning, growing, and sharing my passion for Astrophytum.

🌵 TOTAL TERMINATION DEGRAFT — Astrophytum myriostigma cv. ‘Hercules’ | Japan Strain

I’m sharing my process for completely degrafting this Myriostigma ‘Hercules and transitioning it from grafted growth to its own roots.

Because the rootstock and scion have already fused together, I don’t try to separate them directly at the union.

MY PROCESS:

1. Make the first cut about 1 inch above the fused section. ✂️
Instead of cutting directly through the old graft union, I cut through the Astrophytum approximately 1 inch above where the scion and rootstock have fused. This gives me a clean section of the scion to work with and completely leaves the old rootstock behind.

2. Treat the fresh cut with sulfur powder.
I coat the exposed cut surface with sulfur powder and allow it to begin drying. This helps protect the large fresh wound while the plant starts forming a callus.

3. Allow the cut to completely callus.
I keep the plant dry and give the wound plenty of time to become firm and well sealed. With a cut this large, I don’t rush this stage.

4. Begin the rooting process. 🌱
Once the base is completely callused, the Hercules can be placed on a dry, well-draining rooting medium and allowed to begin producing a completely new root system.

5. Be patient.
A mature Astrophytum can take time to root. I watch the plant rather than the calendar and introduce moisture carefully as rooting progresses.

CUT → TREAT → CALLUS → ROOT → ESTABLISH

I call this technique a “total termination degraft” because I’m not trying to preserve any part of the old rootstock. The graft has served its purpose. From here, I want this plant to build an independent root system of its own.

This is part of the work I enjoy documenting—not just showing a finished plant, but sharing what happens behind the scenes and what I learn along the way.

IT’S A WRAP, ARKANSAS! 🌵❤️

Finally back home in Texas, and my little family and I are incredibly grateful for everyone in Arkansas who showed up for !

We truly enjoyed the show. One of my favorite things was watching people stop at our tables—sometimes looking a little overwhelmed, sometimes completely in awe—because they were seeing plants they had never seen before. 🥹🌵😁

For those who missed us in Arkansas, Madam Cacti is a small Texas grower. Much of what you see on our tables represents years of growing cacti from seeds and selected locally propagated clones, watching them develop, selecting special forms, and patiently growing them into something wonderful that I can finally share with collectors around the USA. 🇺🇸
