Clocks went back over the weekend, so while you're already thinking about the house, here's my little reminder: check your smoke detectors and your carbon monoxide detectors. Press the test button, swap in fresh batteries if they're due, and make sure there's one where it counts — bedrooms, hallways, near the furnace. It takes five minutes, and it's the kind of little job that matters most now that the nights are longer and the heat's running. If one's past its date or chirping, that's a quick swap I can do.

I just put up a new trellis for a pair of climbing roses. They were sitting in pots along the side of the house — now they're in the ground with something solid to climb on, and fresh mulch around the base. Another one for the books. Installed vented soffit material for airflow and wrapped the fascia with white coil stock — clean look, and no more painting!
