From the set of The Preverse by Borna Barzin, last week at QNCC - with Ken Barnett and Sam H. Levine in this incredible shot by Michael Costain.
Lighting by STUDIO GUMGUM and projection by Zack Lobel and built by Breakfast
BOND translated the play’s fictional clinic or institution into an abstract architectural object: a 10-by-10-by-10-foot white cube positioned on stage. A panoramic window opens the cube toward the audience, turning the interior into a theatrical display. The audience becomes a spectator—or even a voyeur—looking into the clinic and witnessing the intimate rituals of treatment taking place inside. The architecture establishes a deliberate distance while simultaneously making the audience complicit in what they are watching.
The cube and all of its associated props are unified through a single white palette, deliberately blurring the distinction between architecture, furniture, and object. The clinical whiteness gives the space an institutional character while creating a neutral, almost abstract environment. At the same time, the white cube becomes a projection surface, allowing light, imagery, and moving graphics to transform the architecture throughout the performance. The set operates simultaneously as a room, an object, and a screen—an architectural framework that shifts between clinical reality and the fictional world of the play.
The cast features Samuel H. Levine, Ken Barnett, Obie Award winner N’yomi Allure Stewart, Hari Nef and James Cusati-Moyer* as well as executive producer Jordan Tannahill.
