Lots of less common hardware details on this big one. Functioning show hinges (strap hinge across the front of shutter) aren’t something that’s often called for. These were originally behind the previous shutters. Those shutters were flipped backward after a failed attempt at paint removal, and the hinges were hammered back to reach their pintles. I took on the interesting task of making them look as though they were born to be show hinges.

Also, a couple of ‘leaners’ requiring a sturdy hook stay.

These are DIY show hinges, smushed into approximate shape by a previous meddler. I enjoyed the task of giving 88 of them a consistent shape and offset. Actually, tuned up 64 pieces, and then created 24 more pieces from older, mid-weight strap hinges. Heavy enough for the job, but thin enough to be altered without heat or big, loud machines.

Jamestown Red says “I’ve been here a long time”.

Circa 1680 type of stuff here, tucked away in Upper Darby, PA.

Top and outer stiles of these shutters have an overlay when closed. That’s the scoop on the inner edge, when open.

Matched some hardware, painted, installed.

Old Capitol Custom Millwork did a fantastic job on these shutters.

Same session. Wildly different tasks.

The hinges were previously bent backward to accommodate their shutters being flipped around, after a painter attempted to clean up the front side. They gave up, decided to turn the shutters around, and mashed the hinges backward until they were bent back far enough to reach their pintles.

I’m turning them into a ‘show hinge’. They’ll remain visible when shutters are open. A clean 90deg angle + a moderate bend for a functional offset.

One hundred pieces.

And some shutters getting paint, as well. In this case, I’m working with an old school siphon gun. It’s a little bit slow, but remarkably clean and efficient.

How clean is this old stuff?! The Rattail and plate pintle looked every bit as rough as the strap hinges in the following photos.

Step by step removing rivets without damaging the hinge or its galvanizing.

Also, steel slide bolt housings are bent slightly to insert bolt into shell. Here we see that in reverse. This doesn’t work for bolts that have a centered pull tab, or bolts with a cast “shell”.
