The honest answer: whichever one is right for how you live.

A gorgeous stained door can be perfect in one house and warp in a coastal one. Paint can hold up beautifully for decades, or chip in a year, depending on what was sprayed and who sprayed it. And if your kitchen sees kids, pets, and a lot of spills, engineered surfaces shrug off almost anything.

So don’t pick the toughest finish on paper. Pick the one built for your space, your climate, and your everyday mess. That’s the conversation we have before anything gets made.

“Custom takes forever.” Not really.

Most of the timeline is in your hands. The quickest projects aren’t the smallest ones. They’re the ones where the decisions come fast.

Once the design is locked, production typically runs about two to three months. The part that stretches is the back and forth before that, and it moves as fast as you do.

Want to speed things up? Come with your appliance specs, a few inspiration photos, and a rough idea of what you need to store. That alone can save weeks.

“We’ll do the lighting later.”

We hear it all the time, and a few months later we usually get the call.

Good lighting isn’t something you stick on. The cabinet has to be built to hold it, with the channel, the clearance, and the finished surfaces all planned in. Decide early and the light looks like it was always meant to be there. Decide late and it looks like what it is: an afterthought.

If lighting is even a maybe, bring it up on day one. It costs very little to plan for, and a lot to wish you had.

Let’s break down materials!

MDF, particle board core, and plywood each do something the others can’t.

MDF is perfectly smooth and stays dead flat, which makes it ideal for painted doors and crisp profiles. Particle board core is flat and stable, which makes it a great base for veneer. Plywood holds screws and handles moisture best, so it earns its place in the spots that take a beating.

Use any of them in the wrong spot and you’ll find out in a few years. Use each one where it’s strongest and the whole cabinet is better for it.

That’s the difference between buying cabinets and having someone build them who knows why.

Most people cross custom off the list before they ever ask what it costs.

That is the mistake. A big box cabinet is a fixed menu at a fixed price. Custom is a set of dials. Turn down the exterior, keep the bones, and the number lands a lot closer than you would think.

So the real question is not “can I afford custom.” It is “where do I want my money to go.”
