The USS Cole attack occurred on October 12, 2000, when two al-Qaeda su***de bombers detonated a bomb on the USS Cole, a U.S. Navy destroyer, while it was refueling in Aden, Yemen.

The attack resulted in the deaths of 17 sailors and injuries to 39 others, marking one of the deadliest assaults on a U.S. naval vessel in recent history.

Borger, Texas. In the summer of 2025, Sterling Shelton started feeling unwell.

What seemed like heat stroke symptoms led to a scan. The scan revealed a 6-centimeter tumor on the left side of his brain.

Grade 4 astrocytoma. One of the most aggressive forms of brain cancer.

Sterling was a Staff Sergeant with the Texas Rangers Special Operations Group, Company C. He was 29 years old. He had a wife named Raven and two young children.

He chose to fight.

Two craniotomies followed. A Gamma Knife procedure. Radiation. Chemotherapy. Treatment at specialty centers in Texas and Mexico. Every door opened, every option pursued.

Sterling fought for 15 months.

On October 8, 2026, that fight ended.

He spent his final 10 days at home. Raven was beside him. Family and friends filled the house. His last breaths were peaceful.

Raven wrote about what it meant to be there.

"It is the greatest privilege and honor to be your wife and to be the one to walk you to the other side."

She has made him a promise she intends to keep for the rest of her life.

"I will tell the kids about you. We will keep going. We will carry your strength with us every day."

Fire Chief Guy Bonin called him irreplaceable. His Texas DPS family is mourning a man who showed up for everyone around him, every shift, for years.

Raven calls Sterling her forever guardian angel.

He was 29 years old. He left behind two children who will grow up hearing about the father who wore the badge and meant every word of it.

Funeral services were held October 14 at Grace Church in Borger.
