Will my roof survive a wind storm?
It is critical that your roof system is rated to sustain heavy wind loads common in your geographic location. We recommend discussing the desired wind rating with your contractor to ensure you don't have to mess with costly repairs or wind claims.
Installation method directly affects the wind rating and resistance of any roof system, and especially synthetic roofing.
For example, ring shank nails have a higher wind tolerance than smooth nails (nearly DOUBLE). This is why smooth nails are not allowed to be used with synthetic Slate or Cedar materials such as Brava Roof Tile. Screws have an even higher wind tolerance than ring shanks, providing an extra 23 mph of resistance.
The reveal or exposure makes a difference. (8'' reveal with ring shank nails has a 110 mph rating while 10'' exposure has a 90 mph rating). Screws can take it the wind rating up to 130 mph.
There are programs, such as "Fortified Roof", that have additional requirements when it comes to decking, locked down edges/specialty drip edge, starter considerations, etc. Following program guidelines like this may increase the wind resistance rating.
