Hiring someone to install flooring in Nevada? Check what their license covers.

A C-3 license covers carpentry. The C-3b finish carpentry subclassification specifically includes wooden flooring.

A C-16 license covers finishing floors. Its C-16a floor covering subclassification includes carpet and other accepted floor coverings, plus preparation of the floor for that finish. Ceramic tile and marble are excluded from C-16a.

What about a handyman? Nevada has a limited exemption for repair or maintenance work valued at less than $1,000 total, including labor and materials. It does not apply when a building permit is required, to certain regulated trades, or when the work is part of a larger project covered by the law. “Handyman” by itself is not a flooring license. Be cautious if someone offers to install an entire floor under that label or proposes splitting the job into smaller invoices to avoid licensing requirements.

Before you sign: Look up the business in the Nevada State Contractors Board’s license search. Check that the license is active, that its classification matches the work, and that its monetary limit covers the project. Get the flooring, subfloor preparation, payment schedule and warranty in writing.

When the scope is unclear, ask the Nevada State Contractors Board which classification is required before work begins.
