I finally walked Poundbury last week, King Charles's town in Dorset, thirty years in the making. Leon Krier masterplanned it, and Ben Pentreath has been one of its lead architects for over two decades, beginning with a student competition win to design the first phase of this very square. I started where the town started: Pummery Square, Phase 1.
Let me address the standard modernist critique first, that Poundbury is fake and toylike. It is unfounded. The design is mature in its complexity and harmonious in human scale and proportion. The materials are truly authentic: natural stone and brick masonry, hewn timber, clay tile roofs, crafted detail with meaning yet reserved ornamentation. There is a timeless quality here, a cultural connection to the heritage of Great Britain with references to vernacular and Georgian antecedents. Those who say it is not of its time must have a very short memory.
