I randomly found a tiny frog in my kitchen! So I popped him into the terrarium I was currently working on.

I think we need a field trip into the woods for plants so we can make our little friend a sustainable home.

One thing you may not know about me… I love frogs. I always have had a special place for amphibians, turtles, lizards, and bugs. So I’m kind of excited to see if I can create a cute little live evo-space for my new lil friend.

I’m so glad I got to see the red Spider Lillies pop up! They only come out for such a short timeframe and then they’re gone again.

Do you know what these small orange fruits are?

🌱 They fall from native trees in the fall
🌱 They’re soft and mushy, about the size of a ping-pong ball
🌱 They are best picked off the ground after they fall
🌱 Picked too early—they make your mouth pucker and dry out; but picked ripe, they taste like a sunny fall day with a hint of pumpkin spice

If you said “American Persimmons,” you’d be right!

What’s your favorite way to eat them (I need ideas and recipes, because I have a lot of them). 😉

Knowing when to pick pears can be tricky…

Unlike many fruits, pears are harvested before they’re fully ripe. If you wait until they’re soft and perfectly ripe on the tree, you may get pears that are mushy or starting to spoil from the inside.

Signs that pears are ready to pick:

🍐 The pear should have reached its mature size and color.

🍐 Give it a gentle lift and tilt upward — it should separate from the branch easily.

🍐 Finish ripening pears inside at room temp after they’ve been picked.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but…

Ugly produce has purpose too and is often an indicator of being grown organically with less chemical interference and (likely) more weather (or pest) related anomalies. But it is generally still edible.

Just cut around bad spots or find new ways to use what you’ve got! And if you don’t have the time and space for it, freeze it for later! This works great for fruits and soup scraps to make broth or soup stock.

The disgusting truth about what’s going on in our industrialized food systems…

There’s p**p in our food… for real. This is exactly why I started sourcing my food differently and I started teaching people how to source their food differently—mainly direct to smaller local farmers, farm markets, regenerative farmers, and growing, cooking, and foraging for your own food.

YOU can control where you get your food and how it gets handled. The politics involved in our industrial food systems are wild right now, and I don’t talk enough about it.

But this is a start… and it starts with p**p.

You’ve been warned…

We try to stay on task but those vegetables come out of nowhere and beg to be picked! The next thing we know, it’s been over an hour and we forgot our harvest basket… 🤦🏻‍♀️

If you have a million cherry tomatoes, this is the easy recipe you need!

My family and I had a recipe similar to this at an Italian restaurant and it was incredible.

Are the Keifer Pears ready to harvest? Not quite—but mine are pretty close.

The harvest window is generally around late September-October.

And pears can be a little tricky—not only are they susceptible to multiple diseases and issues (fire blight, rust, russeting, bugs), but they’re also picked BEFORE they’re fully ripe! YUP! You pick them when they are mature, firm, and easily let go of the tree, and they finish ripening on the counter.

I found this out a few years ago when I waited for them to be soft on the tree……… and the inside was rotting from the core out.

Did you know about this trick for harvesting pears?

I found the first few fallen persimmons off my property’s trees. Since it is so early, I didn’t keep these and gave them to the chickens. But this is a sign that autumn is coming…
