A patterned lampshade is the easiest way to make a statement in a room, and the one many people put off choosing. Two new stories on The Light Edit take it on. How to Choose a Patterned Lampshade uses three designers’ rooms to show how a lampshade earns its place among the other patterns in a room: it shares a color with them, differs from them in scale, and brings a kind of pattern they do not have. We stock nine of them: Marlborough, the largest-scale floral; Rabanna, the small block-printed chevron; Marden, a loose field of hand-drawn triangles; Popple, Fermoie's study of water; Whittle, with its carved-wood texture; Figured, a quiet tonal weave; Wicker, built on interlaced strands; Moiré, the watered look of silk; and Strié, fine combed lines that read almost as a plain. How do you choose a patterned lampshade for a room that already has pattern in it? Start with a color the room already has, vary the scale of the motifs, and mix different kinds of pattern so each one has a role. Our new story on The Light Edit walks through three designer rooms, with a Fermoie Pink Popple lampshade in Studio Olivine’s Brooklyn Heights Designer Showhouse bedroom, Ian Sanderson Yellow Honey Quiver lampshades in Toledo Geller’s Mansion in May game room, and a Fermoie Nut Brown Popple lampshade in Ashley Hanley’s 1939 Forever Home, and breaks each room down into the patterns in play. Meet Mavis, Merryweather, and Flora, a little bird and two rabbits who bring light to the surfaces that usually go without, from a bookshelf to the end of a kitchen counter.

We’ve topped each one with an Ian Sanderson Quiver lampshade, hand-pleated in England, in Honey, Terracotta, and Fennel. The ikat-inspired print adds a dash of color, and the lamps add the charm. Each comes with its own lampshade, so Quiver is an easy swap whenever you want a change.
