🍂 When should you cut back your perennials in Zone 5b?

Let your plants tell you when they’re ready! Wait until foliage has died back naturally or a hard frost has turned it brown. Healthy green leaves are still helping plants store energy for next year.

✂️ Fall cleanup: Once dormant, you can remove dead foliage from hostas, daylilies, and herbaceous peonies. Remove and dispose of diseased foliage to help reduce problems next season.

🌾 Leave some standing: Healthy coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, sedum, and ornamental grasses can stay through winter. Their seed heads provide food for birds, and their stems offer shelter for beneficial insects.

🌿 Skip the fall haircut: Lavender and evergreen or semi-evergreen perennials don’t need to be cut to the ground.

Mums are a fall favorite, but did you know a few simple care tips can help keep them looking beautiful longer? 🍁

☀️ Give Them Sunshine! Mums thrive with at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

💧 Water at the Base! Keep the soil consistently moist, but avoid getting the blooms wet. This helps prevent flowers from deteriorating too quickly.

❄️ Watch Those Temperatures! Frost can damage those beautiful blooms! When freezing temperatures are expected, bring your potted mums inside overnight or cover them for protection.

🌼 Remove Faded Flowers! Pinching off spent blooms helps keep your mums looking fresh and full.

🍂 Make the most of your fall color! With a little TLC, you can enjoy your mums well into the autumn season!
