Hey good people, Batavia here and we’re curious about if you ever pulled a plant out of your garden only to wonder if you should have left it a little longer…

In this episode of the Backyard Gardens Podcast, Ben and I are looking at the other side of that question: **When NOT to pull plants out of your garden.**

We talk about peppers, tomatoes, sweet potatoes, okra and eggplant, and why sometimes leaving a plant in the garden makes sense, while other times that space could be better used for something else.

It's not always as simple as "the season is ending, so pull it." 😉
You can listen to us, anywhere you stream podcasts or check out the episode on YouTube:** https://youtu.be/eFRSvvkHviE?is=Dp4r-ksbLnLQmPDG

Come hang out with us and see what we're leaving in the garden...and what we're pulling!

Hey good people, Batavia here with an August garden tour! 🌱

Every year I reach this point in the season when I have to remind myself of something my grandmother used to say: sometimes you just have to let the garden run wild. 😂

The garden is full, some things are thriving, some things are struggling, and I'm already thinking about getting the fall garden planted while I'm still trying to keep up with the summer harvest.

So today I'm taking you on an honest walk through the garden, just as it is at the end of August.

Happy Growing! ~B 💚

Hey good people, Batavia here with the 2026 onion harvest!

When I planted these onions back in April, I wanted a good harvest.
The funny thing is…I didn't really know what “good” meant. I figured I'd know it when I saw it.

These started from seed indoors in February and grew in one of my raised beds for about three months before I started harvesting them. I ended up harvesting in two rounds, and then weighed the full harvest.Let's just say this: I've got a new goal for next year. 😊

These onions will spend some time curing before hopefully carrying me through much of the fall and into winter.

I put together a quieter little harvest video this time, just following the onions from the bed to the final weigh-in. If you're curious to see what a “good” onion harvest looked like for me this year, come spend a few minutes in the garden with me. 💚

🎥 The new video is on YouTube:

Which Kale Actually Tastes Better? 😋Hey good people! Batavia here and every year I grow both lacinato (dinosaur or dino) kale and a curly kale variety, and honestly...I enjoy them for different reasons. Do you have a favorite kale variety, or are you growing something different this season?

Hey good people, Batavia here, and I must say I'm just a little frustrated. 😩 We do our best to protect the garden, but sometimes something gets through. A little Garden Journal moment from our standout raised bed, and a reminder that even with our best efforts, we don't always get to decide what happens in the garden.

🌱Cut & Come Again + Kale Pots for Fall🌱
Hey good people! Batavia here and these greens have been giving me harvest after harvest, and I love seeing how well they respond to a cut-and-come-again approach. Oh and I’m thinking about starting more Kale Pots for Fall. 🌱 happy growing! ~B

Hey good people, Batavia here and there’s a lot happening in the garden right now! 🌱
Some things are ready to harvest, some are still on the watch list, and I’m starting to think about what comes next as spaces begin to open up.

I took you along for a walk through the garden to see what’s happening, what I’m watching, and what I’m already thinking about planting next.

And there’s a little unexpected neighborhood/community moment in this one that made me smile.

New garden update is up! https://youtu.be/9zcKd7CguBo
