Yesterday, before the Bears win, I received a call from an 84-year-old gentleman. He owns a home worth about $500,000 with only a $150,000 mortgage and has roughly $200,000 in retirement savings.

On paper, he could be a great candidate for a reverse mortgage.

The problem? He hasn’t made a mortgage payment since January and is now in foreclosure.

Now, his options are extremely limited. He’ll likely need to tap his retirement savings to get out of foreclosure, then rebuild a history of making his mortgage, taxes and other obligations on time before a reverse mortgage may become an option.

The lesson: CALL BEFORE you miss that first payment.
